Hi,
I've fitted Hunt Couplings to 2 rakes of MK3 stock and a rake of MK2A stock, after fitting all at some point derailed, I decided to return to the original couplings and now in the MK2A's they wont sit tight... any help or suggestions would be appreciated, Many Thanks.
Steve.

Is it by any chance Graham Farish stock you have?

Farish use a slightly smaller locating pin on their couplings so if you fit couplings made to the NEM standard used by other makers it stretches the pocket so if you need to go back you find your Farish coupling hooks are now loose.

Only option is to fit couplings from another maker, I ended up having to do this after trying Dapols other coupling options, when I went back to the standard coupling hook I had to use the Dapol version because all the original Farish ones are now loose in their pocket, do loose they would often pull out.

Interestingly Farish short couplings are made the the European standard, but their standard coupling is the one with the smaller locating pins/pegs.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes it's the Farish MK2A coaches and as you say the pockets are stretched, the MK1's (BG and RMB I'm using in the rake) are quite the opposite, pain to get in pain to get out. I'm not sure what's caused the derailments maybe the Hunt couplings are fussy or dislodged wheelsets in the coaches but it's frustrating... The hunt couplings are great but (can't speak for others) they've been a bit of a pain for me.

Will try the dapol's though as you suggested.

Hunts wont add articulation and Farish pockets are probably too rigid, requiring the Rapido or buckeyes etc to flex.  The website for the Hunt couplings sells an HST pack for Dapol but notably does not say they are for Farish as well and I suspect this is deliberate.

The Hunt HST pack is for NEM pockets. The Farish HST was only ever fitted with sprung Rapidos.

They won't work well with anything bogie mounted, as you turn the two bogies into a single rigid unit, highly likely to be pulled off on curves.

I have just been running my Wrexham and Shropshire  rake with medium Hunt Elite couplingsBoth NEM and the spring type and the set ran backwards and forwards over my cross over from the down line to the up and from the main up line into the branch line going flat out with NO problems at all .
I allso ran them over the Dapol easyshunt magnets with out any  problems not even a twitch .
Very happy with them I wish I could convert all my stock to use them but to fit NEM conversion pockets would cost me a, fortune .

Surely you don't need to convert anything if you've been using the T-shank and spring style of Hunt without problems?

ntpntpntp Your are quite right but a lot of my stock is Peco and very early Grafar with the old type loop couplings .The MEM TYPE are very quick and easy The spring type are very brittle and take longer to fit and at my age 76 are a bit awkward to put in and twist without breaking .
But once done I have had NO problems with derailing .
