Magnetic couplings

Just found these online, they look an innovative way of coupling things together and appear less intrusive than current couplings.

Seems to be normal magnets then an Elite range that defy physics as polarity doesn't matter!
Has anyone got any and had a play?

No need to defy physics, just use a small magnet placed horizontally so the N pole is on the left and the S pole is on the right. When coupling to an identical coupler the unlike poles will be adjacent and attract to make the coupling.

When I did O level physics magnetism hadn't been invented.......
That'll be why the normal ones are circular and the Elite are rectangular

Another possibility to consider are the Peho electrically conductive magnetic couplings. However, these are only available in the NEM versions and can be somewhat bulky, with a large gap between the vehicles.

I made some of these by cutting off the hook on a rapido coupler and glueing a small magnet in its place. The result was unsucessful as there was no way to stop the magnets connecting offset with the result that the stock derailed on curves and points. Unless these have a means of connecting inline then they are in my mind a waste of time.

No problems with the Peho couplings, they line up correctly when brought together.

That is exactly what I did, but if the coupling pockets are on the body and not the bogie and can swing as per the Dapol IOA then they will misalign. If the coupling are fitted to non swinging coupling on 4 wheel stock there is no articulation between the stock. My advice to anybody wanting to try these buy one pair and see what happens to with your stock.

My experience is not with the Dapol IOA, but they certainly work in body-mounted couplers of a Farish Class 350 and between Dapol Mk3s both run in pull and push mode.

I've been meaning to get some of those for ages, never seem to remember.  So as soon as I saw your photo I bunged an order in - just got to sit and wait now
