A stranger in camp

Spotted this forum a couple of days ago and read my way through most of it.
Certainly looks as if it`s going to do what it says on the tin so I hope you don`t mind me joining.
Started building a train layout back in 1983 on the birth of my 1st son. A (the layout not my son)  which quite honestly was always a disaster. It was added to in about 1989/90 having been pestered by  #1 and his smaller brother #2......still couldnt get it to run well and gave up till autumn 2008 when I was recovering from a nasty long spell in hospital and wife wanted me to 'do something' instead of sitting around 24/7. The boys came to my rescue and donated the  and all its  problems so..................
It was to be a new layout using old stock on a new 3ftX5ft board and as cheap as possible, I felt that spending cash on it wasnt an option
Now close on 3 years and a shed load of £notes into what was a 1 or 3 months build I must be about 33% of my way into it and I look on it in dispair of finishing it some weeks
Its a very much imaginitive stream erra GWR and southern with 'no rivet counting' and PC modelling unheard of.
Maybe I can get round to some pictures of it soon.

Hello jonclox,  That's great that your boys have been involved with the railway.  I hope my son does the same, but he's only 7 months old at the moment.     Would love to see some pictures when you get the chance.

Well if its a case of puters over   Im afraid the puter won the boys over even before they hit their teens.......I was left with something they never realy got exited about.
Maybe pictures will come from me when I get into the fora a bit more and gain confidence in myself and you lot so far I can only say my efforts look pathetic compared to others Ive seen here.

This point has been discussed on another thread Jon, if you post your pictures you will get an honest opinion, worded, hopefully, in a way that will be constructive not only to you but to all that read them.

My colleague at work says " the man who never made a mistake, never learned a thing, he also didn't do a lot either" 

So get the pictures up and we can all enjoy the learning process

My post are usually light hearted and often said tongue in cheek but I hope never rude or insulting so I ask forgiveness for faining a fear of posting details etc of my layout.
My camera at the moment is buried somewhere in my pile of odds and sods relating to the railway and I will try and dig it out over the next day or so.
I see someone has posted pictures of their incredible layout using Peco surface mounted point motors. Great news for me because I decided to electrify my points months after the track laying was completed so its a path I had to follow to save ripping everything up again

Peco surface mount point motors were quite handy in my case. As the layout was meant to go on top of my desk and couldn't be too high a base as it had a computer stood on it, I didn't have any option to put point motors under the layout. The storage sidings at the back hangs over the back of the desk though and I picked up some cheap non surface mount point motors, so I'm going to rig the points to the storage sidings and those connecting the main line with the yard with those, possibly using pull rods with an omega loop to put the motors at the back of the layout.

For the surface mount motors, they're normally covered with bushes (removed as loose items when moving) although I'm tempted to see if I can disguise one as a stack of rails.

Hi Zwilnik. Thanks for ideas about the surface point motors. I think that I shall probably aim at a covering of small bush material but that is still in the future. At the mommet theres still far to much constructual,re-alining, and general modifying going on.

Thanks Amin I had got that far but then found out that my camera isnt  working  so I have no picture to upload.
I.T. expert son coming over to lunch today so I bet he will sort the camera out in seconds. Till then......watch this space

   Ummmmmmmmmm how did I do that?
The other album in there does have 3 early pictures of 1 of my layout 'cameos' during developement........if you can get into it  
Think Ive managed to get 3 picture from this morning in there now
