summer tempratures are here in the uk and duringthe day the shed is enjoying high 20's tempratures but still plundging near 2-3 at nights this seems to have had a bad effect on a few of my curved sections with the rail literally popping out of the ballast in three points over night or today,,,,,,

the rails were secured with double sided tape then ballasted on so i think some expanssion and  contraction of the baseboard has caused the rail to pop out,

it was easily sorted with a nice massage back and forth the rails slipped back into possition and the gaps at the joins that opened up in autumn have now closed a little and the rails are now securely pinned down allong the effected areas, im thinking of installinga solar powered fan to the shed maybe bring in some air and keep the temprature down some i did allow for some expanssion contraction but with the temprature varying between 28-30 then 2-3 at night the wood must be movingat least a little, nowall ineedto do is reballast a fewpatches and all is well,,,,,,,,,

sadly i felt the need to urgently repair this problem and forgot that beforeand after shotsmight have been usefull!!!!! ::)

Hi,

Not had too many problems in my shed. Although that may be down to the fact that most of my track is pinned to 2" pink foam and I don't ballast.

Any expansion/contraction of the baseboard will be taken up by the foam plus the track should be able to flex slightly without coming apart.

Did you seal the boards both on all sides with a suitable varnish when you built the baseboards. That should reduce the amount the boards move to a reasonable level. If you didn't then you might want to varnish all but the top, and hope the top scenery did most of the trick !

Either way you do need small gaps in the rails and if it pops out again you might need to slide the fishplate over and trim the ends a tiny bit so it can take the board shrinking without forcing the rail out.

I nailed my track down ballasted it and have no trouble, the layout is located in a steel backyard shed which I had to insulate and subject to very harsh weather here in Oz, temps can fluctuate between 8c and 40c with unbearable humidity caused by tropical rain.

Yer I primed it when I started, but the whole shed breathes and flexes so a little movement was expected just a little too much, instead of taking up the gap they kinda popped out in the middle, as I said a quick massage and the rails settled in again and everything back to normal,
