Any Treckies out there?

Hi,

I like watching Star Trek particularly, the Next Generation, DS9, Voyager etc. I got Star Trek Discovery season 1 for Christmas. Discovery seems quite different to the others, its more violent and gory (which I don't like) and the story line is to complicated and not believable. I didn't like the way the Klingons always talking in Klingon with english subtitles and why did they look so different to the Klingons of the other series.

Is season 2 more of the same or does it get more like the Star Trek of old? I believe young Spock is in it.

What do others think of Discovery? Is season 2 worth watching or will it disappoint like season 1?

I love Star Trek. But I'm of a certain age and there is only one- the original one! I hated New Generation with all that emotional psycho-babble and everything that  came after it is worse. The original series, however, is fab!
Time to put on my tin helmet...

I found season 1 to be very different too but I'm not sure what else they could have done to be different from the Next Gen/DS9/Voyager series.
The dynamic between Pike and Spock in series 2 is engaging and there are some stand out episodes. There was a new show runner from the middle of series 2 and it shows.
The upcoming season will be interesting as it's set in a different time period so won't be tied to any other series.

No Discovery season 2 spoilers please - I've not seen that yet    Now that season 1 is on freeview I'm watching that through (I've had it on my network drive for some time) and I'm hoping season 2 follows it.  Yes having to read subtitles is sometimes irritating, especially when I've just had the show on on the background whilst doing other things.


I must admit I have finally tired of the original Star Trek and don't bother with it now, especially the later series where some of the plot ideas were frankly daft and haven't aged well.   

Next Gen is ok once it got going and the characters settled in.   

I wasn't a big fan of Voyager but I find I have to watch the current run every evening, and the Sunday omnibus just in case I missed one during the week!  A big time waster when I'm supposed to be getting my layout ready for NGSE in April!

I love Deep Space Nine, that's definitely my favourite of the franchise.  Some very interesting characters.

Enterprise didn't really grab me, but again I'll watch it when it runs through on the telly.

Oh and sorry Sheldon Cooper but I also love Babylon 5, I have the full set on DVD and watch it through at least twice a year

The original Star Trek looks very dated now. But it is 50 years old. I have not seen Babylon 5.

Totally agree. So many races involved in one programme.
Brought up on Star Trek, through Next Generation, into DS9 and on to Voyager then stopped.
Premise of Voyager OK but Kathryn Janeway was on helium, I'm sure.

I built a project published in Silicon Chip magazine some years ago which simulates the swish sound of the sliding doors on the Enterprise of the original series.

It was triggered by a simple pulse from a button or Reed switch, which meant you could install it anywhere, even on normal hinged doors.

Although it was really quite cool, using a digital sample of the sound from the show, after installing it on a door at Chez Bealman, I found it became annoying very quickly, and it ended up being binned.

I've watched the whole Discovery series on Netflix. You have to wait until the last episode before it all makes sense.

I loved the original and TNG grew on me. DS9 was great whilst Voyager had both good and bad bits but it did have Seven of Nine;)
Didn't really like Enterprise which was compounded as I'm not a fan of Scott Bakula.
However Discovery is my favourite yet with a great conclusion to series 2. Can't wait for series 3.

I agree with you on subtitled Klingon. I have the first season on DVD and gave up on it, partly because I can't help seeing the captain as Lucius Malfoy 🤣 but the story really isn't gripping me.

Didn't think much of DS9 or Enterprise but love Voyager! Went back to the premise of the original series exploring new worlds and meeting new races (tho I would happily have ejected Kes and Neelix thru an airlock along with Harry Kim and his clarinet)

The producers of Discovery listened to the fan feedback on the new-look Klingons and dialled back their appearance for Season 2, giving them hair and toning down the teeth to lose the lisp. No more "Kaleth" 

Without spoiling things, it was a big improvement on season 1 and introduced some familiar characters from "The Cage". The Enterprise looked amazing.

Really looking forward to "Picard" on Amazon Prime. The world needs Jean-Luc Picard more than ever...

Possibly the best science fiction show on television. While season-long arcs are everywhere today, Babylon 5 had the vision to do a 5-year storyline and follow it through to the conclusion in an era where most shows were still purely episodic.

The production values make the show look a bit dated now (it was produced on roughly half the budget that TNG and DS9 were receiving at the time) but the epic storyline still holds up after 25 years. I have dug out my DVDs and been watching them with my kids and we are just into Season 4. Seriously good viewing!

Or do it like the Beeb. Record a sheet of paper being pulled from an envelope.

Actually the project's designer admitted he spent months trying to synthesise the sound electronically, but finally ended up recording it off the TV!

Yes, it felt darker and more 'realistic' than other Star Trek series but could still have fun: (rules of acquisition). I was never particularly fond of the whole alternate DS9/Terren story arc and some episodes felt like fillers while you were impatiently waiting to see what might happen with the Dominion War but none-the-less it's still my favourite Star Trek hands-down.
Plus I had a major crush on Theresa 'Terry' Farrell aka Jadzia Dax Still can't believe she quit!
