Who knows about televisions

I'm no great fan of television except for sport (although Mrs PP watches lots of dramas, documentaries and films).
We have Sky Q which suits us well and gives us access to Netflix, You Tube etc. It allows us both to watch what we are interested in.

Anyway.....my question concerns our actual TV (we have only one).
Living in a small cottage our TV is small (22 inch). Anything much larger and we'd need to move next door to watch!
The TV is a Samsung LCD which is 11 years old and works fine.
Should we update to a newer model (we could go up to 24 inch)?
I could get a 24 inch LED TV at a reasonable price but is it worth it
Or should we stick to our old one till it goes pop?
Your thoughts would be welcome.

My train of thought would be - is there anything that your current one can't/doesn't do which you'd really like?
If the answer's no, buy another loco instead

With a small size TV like that I would say that you probably wouldn't notice the higher definition of HD and UHD.

Newer screens do have better contrast ratios and higher refresh rates which some say are better for watching sport (not my thing so I don't know).

I never bought into the whole 3D TV thing, which now seems to have died away anyway. I do like a reasonably large immersive screen size in high definition though, it amazes me that our smallest in the house is now 32" (same as our largest living room TV was back in the 90s) and the others are 42" or larger.

Go look at a few in the large tech superstores (the small ones will be tucked away at the back somewhere), but do remember they always turn the settings to full dynamics and brightness to impress. The first thing I do when I get a new TV is dial it right back to cinema mode so it doesn't burn my eyes out

If yours ain't broke and you're happy with it then no need to fix it. TVs last for many years, I found myself almost wishing one would fail so I'd have the excuse to replace it. Finally when our lad said he needed one for gaming at his student pad I was able to justify donating one to him and getting a new UHD model for ourselves

The same has everyone else if it aint broke... The only thing is if you bought a more modern tv with freeview and netflix and catchup on it for free, you could maybe save some money from Sky Q and just pay for the internet.

But yeah, like wot everyone else said, if it works and there's nothing specific that it can't do which a new set does, why change?

How far do you sit from the tv?,im 6ft from a 32" and its about right. As for buying a tv to get the latest smart youtube netflix immersive experience,dont bother,use an external box ,its cheaper to replace the box than the telly.

When large format flat screens first arrived about 20 years ago one of neighbours bought one. The only place it would fit was on the chimney breast - no fire in use. Unfortunately, the opposite wall was only 2 metres away, so from a sitting position on a sofa, the viewers eyes were less than 1.8 metres from the screen, and they had to look up at the screen. Bit like the front row of the cinema, or watching a tennis match from halfway down the court, the viewer would turn their head to follow the action. This was the same neighbour who converted the whole of his postage-stamp sized back garden to a heated plunge pool.

I agree if it ain't broke don't fix it Our tele in the bedroom is an old 12inch portable valve type and the picture is still as clear as it was when we bought it second hand from Granada 35 years ago and it was an Ex rental tele then I think if I remember it cosy us £48 .
When they told everyone that they were turning of analogue tv transmission ,I worked in Argos and an old man came in and said that the two other stores told him he will HAVE to buy a new tele as he wouldn't be able to watch anything ,he told me the tele was his only pleasure as he couldnt get out of the house so he watched a lot of sports on the Sky box and allso a lot of documentaries ,,
He asked me what was the cheapest new tele and what size would it be ,I told him if he is watching his tele on Sky he would go to bed that night and when he woke up in the morning he would still be able to watch his programs just the same .
A week later the old man came into the store with a younger man and they came over to me with a huge bunch of flowers for my wife and a large box of chocolates for me as I was the only one that had told his Dad the truth and saved him a lot of needless expense .
I could of easily sold him a new tele but I wanted to tell him the truth .
I would have got a right telling off by our store manager if he had known ,but I've never believed in ripping people off and allways hope that nobody would rip me off .
