Hernia Operation Advice

Hello all,

My Father goes in hospital tomorrow for a hernia operation. Its a day release affair, but I was wondering what after effects he could face?
He's understandably worried as we all are in the family, however if anyone here has been through the same is there any advice you can give extra to the usual medical advice that could also make his recovery quicker or more comfortable??

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

I went for several days in hospital, surrounded by pretty nurses.............................

Best advice is to takes things easy. It's ok havibg a cuppa while sitting down, but avoid carrying one for a couple of days.

It took me a few weeks before I was able to lift very much, but it is much better getting it done, rather than leaving it.

Take things slowly, and it will be sore for a while.

Thank you. Question? How did you find walking after the operation? WAs you on your feet soon after? Did it take you long to get back to walking fully?

Whilst I did not have a hernia op, it seems that hospitals want to get you up and about asap these days. All of us last week had full or partial thyroids removed, so all had full width cuts across our throats (sorry to be so graphic),and we all left the ward within less than 24 hours, returning next day for staples to be removed. I was driving again by Friday, with just a sore neck to remind me at junctions. If he is having keyhole, and is otherwise fit, he should walk out after a few hours.

Dave - I have had 2 hernia ops in my life. The first was by keyhole surgery and I suffered very little. I walked out of the hospital next day (!) with advice not to drive/lift any weight for a week, and very quickly recovered fully.
The second one was not by keyhole and was not good. I came out of hospital after 3 days with a belly full of staples and had to be looked after by my sister for a couple of weeks. I could walk with some pain, but could not drive for those 2 weeks. I then had to go to my GP surgery to have the staples removed which was painful but a great relief. Although I made a full recovery, even a year later I was still getting some pain if I moved awkwardly.
I consider myself fully recovered but, having had 2 ops now, I will not lift any large weight.
I'm sorry if this comes over as a horror story and don't want you to worry about your Dad. It has to be done and I am sure he'll get great treatment and advice. If there's anything else you need to know drop me a PM

I had the same at 17 years old but was in for circumcision - pretty nurses in black tights and teenage hormones do NOT go together . . . . . as numerous instances of busted stitches proved!

I had a double hernia but was told they would have to do two operations.

Had one done and then the other a few months later. Was in and out same day on both ocassions.

Best advice is don't try and do anything too strenuous after the op for a couple of weeks. Walking is OK if you do it slowly and definitely don't try and lift anything.

I was walking, slowly, the next day. I had been under a general for mine.

When I had my hernia op, I had to stay in overnight (it was bigger than they thought!!), and the next morning I went to use the loo and found it quite painful, and the nurse quite simply said to me "if you dont go then you'll have to stay until you do", so thats blown your theory out the door

But then they get their own back on you, by giving you an enema every hour, on the hour, until you do go. And when you finally go, you blow the bl**dy doors off!

Update: dad is doing great, better than expected, (don't wanna jinx it though). He's walking about and doing fine. Thanx again for all your help, and advice and to all the PM's I have received from many members.
