Interestingly, the 'Daily Express', a paper not noted for its affection for Continental Europe, had a Time For Change campaign all about getting rid of the clock changes:

I hope that SummerTime will be abolisced soon and that people will have the common sense to use the real SUN-time  which is winter time...  .

Doing just that caused much confusion with early railway timetables, the time in Penzance for example being several SUN-time minutes different from London. It was only when a standard MAN-made time was introduced across the network that things became easier.

Indeed - the guards set their watches by London time and the stations along the route set their clocks by the guards' watches.
The crazy thing was, the drivers were the ones who were expected to keep to time but, at least in the early days, they weren't issued with watches, only the guards.
