Hello all! Good evening, at least when I'm typing this.
How is everyone?
I'm so excited, I just purchased my very first N-Gauge loco off eBay. Tomix N-Scale Percy. Wonderful price. Paid a total of $49. Just waiting for the seller to ship it.

Bought it with the intention to repair it, as the seller said it ran poorly. In his own words:
Quotebut I wanted to make it perfectly clear that Percy is a very poor runner. It will stall out and not move even if you physically push it. Then other times it will run with a very jerky motion. It is not at all dependable.
I wanted to point out how polite he was, when most sellers would've just left you in the dark.
Anyway, I'll likely be coming to the forum asking for help with him as well in a couple months. But that isn't my topic.

Anyway, Another Newbie question. So, I was looking around some messages on the Sodor Island Forums, and I found this little message.
From user Snowflake TH (From this thread: http://sodor.proboards.com/thread/1168/tomix-gauge-trains-discussion?page=2)

Quoteblegh Tomix :P

Great range, but I bought a Tomix James recently only for it to shorten out on American track (which is rather annoying, Bachmann locos run on Hornby track fine), and thus lead to controversy with a Japanese story on Ebay. :P

Did do a review of Tomix James, expect a video of it soon.

A member of the club also has Thomas, which ran fine on American tracks, making me all the more confused. They're lovely looking models too. :)

I'm very confused as to what this means,  I think it means he's shorting out on American track? Does that mean I can only use it on Tomix's track and not on Bachmann's EZ track or something? Or does he mean with an American controller?
Does this mean I can't use an american Controller and I have to purchase a converter?

I'm also asking the OP, JIC. But considering the post I'm referring to is 7 years old.

I'm really sorry I asked it here, but I thought you guys might know. You guys have a lot of knowledge and I'm just a dumb newb. :P
I'm really sorry if the answer is obvious and I'm just dumb.

In theory any N gauge trains should run with any combination of track and controller (provided both are DC, and the Thomas range isn't DCC compatible). It's possible the person complaining had some issues specific to their setup, e.g. shorting over points.

FWIW the Tomix Thomas locos I have run fine on a mixture of Tomix and Kato track with Tomix, Kato and Bachmann controllers.

silly moo

My Thomas and Percy have run on both Lima and Peco track with a Bachmann controller without any problems. One thing about the Thomas range is that some of the rolling stock is slightly over scale so check tunnel and platform clearances when building your layout.

Thank you all for help. It turns out, according to him, his layout was wired poorly.
Another question, Will the japanese controllers work in the US' power sockets?

If sold in US they should be suited to 110v. Otherwise purchase wall wart with appropriate plug from local supplier and 15DC output and use to power the controller and point switches.
