HI Dave, and welcome to the forum

I've always had great service from Trackside Signs................

I used pvc lettering on a piece of wood. Looks smart and is cheaper.

You might be able to find a local sign company to do one for you. Most of them use computer cut out vinyl letters these days. You will need a good idea of what you want to save time. You might be able to persuade them to give you a discount price if the sign has their name on it somewhere (in small letters)

Likewise a local printing company might be able to help too.

My son used to race cars, his most important sponsor was his panelbeater followed by the sign company that did all the car's vinyl stickers.

He used thank his sponsors by giving them block mounted photographs of the racing car to put in their offices. They really appreciated this.  So if you do get a sponsor, send them a picture of the layout so they can see their sign being used.

There are a number of companies like https://www.vinylletteringonline.co.uk/ who will provide whatever lettering you want in many colours . The one I had came on a roll. You just unroll it and the letters stick on.

These are my signboards. One is a purchased totem at £45 or so the other is vinyl lettering from the site mentioned above. All those letters cost less than £20!
In both cases they are mounted on a left over piece of laminated flooring with a piece of timber attached to keep it straight and hold the lights. Going off topic layouts are much better with their own lighting.

This what the back of mine looks like. You can see the laminate floor, the timber to keep it straight and the LED light strip. Although LED ultra bright strip is not cheap I find it gives a good light without being bulky or fragile.
