L & Y 0-6-0 tender loco

Hi is there any loco which is similar to the L&Y 0-6-0n loco's, I would like one for my layout. Is the Union Mills 2F or 3F anything like for example or any kits to fit a Gf chassis for example.

Only thing I can think of L&Y is the Gem kit for the saddle tank..

The 0-6-0 tender locos ought to be prime Union Mills territory though being relatively simple, compact inside cylindered locos.

Off the top of my head, the LNWR Cauliflower would maybe the best starting point for a Hack of a UM loco.

I have found out the Cauliflower had 5.3" inch wheels,too big I need 5.1" wheels. The Adams 0395 has 5.1" wheels but thre tender looks a bit high.

2" scales to about .166 of a millimetre, will you be counting rivets too?

The 2mm society shop only does wheels in increments of 0.5 mm with one exception at 11.75mm, if they are happy with the nearest 3" then I would suggest that's a reasonable guideline, ABS beaver only made their's with 1mm increments.

The cab and on the Cauliflower is also somewhat different, showing what appear to be water tanks that would have to be hacked off. FWIW though, 2" is a negligible difference in terms of driver size (less than half a mm in n gauge), so if you find the perfect locomotive in terms of boiler diameter, cab style, etc. and the only thing that is off is the driver size by 1-3" then you are in the clear! Hi John, I am modeling the late 50's / 60's, end of steam and start of green diesels. It does not have to be exact, there is a book I have been using for reference in it is a L & Y class 27 in Bury station and another pulling a goods train. I like the 4F's but I would love a class 27, something that is old but they kept running into the sixties. I will probably have it black with a BR motif like in the book,it would be nice to have a loco that is not the run of the mill loco.

Chris, as you've already mentioned, union mills cauliflower or f2 will be your best bet.

Has Alan (etched pixel) said to me a couple of summers ago, the 27's tender is to small for Colin. What kind of tweaking are you thinking of doing on your new loco?. Cheers john.

Thanks for those links John, I am thinking the Adams might be better than the Cauilflower. The boiler is the right shape but the dome needs to be farther forward and of course the cab windows need to be round. I will have a think about it, it is for a future project but of course it would be a sickner if the model I choose was no longer in production.I have never made any metal type of kits but I have been making models for a long time, it could end up as a expensive mess. Thanks again for your help.

The 0395 smoke box door slopes, only about 2degrees IIRC, but noticeable on the prototype..

Thanks Mike, I need to do more research, I am not up on all the names for everything, I need a book on Loco's I think.It will probably be easier to take some metal off the Belpair type Boiler to make it round rather than try to alter the firebox.I will have to have a think about this and if it is in my capabilities. Thinking of the era, is it not likely that a few Lner or Gwr loco/trains visited from time to time. Gives you variety, excursion or diversion. john.

Hi again, yes John I see where you are going, B1's and even a K3 where seen in the Bury area in the 50's and 60's which the layout is based. But in 1962 of the most seen was ex L&Y and LMS 0-6-0s at 29 each. A couple of 9F's were seen and another B1 the same year. There are a couple of pics in the book of a Class 27 number 12382 which was a Bury Engine (26D) and also a pic of 52245 going through Bury station with a goods, that pic was 1953 though and that loco 52245 was withdrawn 12 months later. Thanks again for your help, I might go for the Adams, it would mean altering the smokebox door but the front would need some removing anyway and I believe the metal is quite soft on UM loco's so fairly easy to work. I have seen smoke box doors somewhere probably N Brass or BH, I will have a think about it, I have plenty to do at the moment, I have two loco's which I need to convert to dcc.
