My lounge has had a fireplace in it which at some point has been blocked off, now there's a small plastic grille covering where it used to be. Every so often a woodlouse pokes its head out of the grille, and then falls down to land with a very slight thump below, behind some books.

This has been going on for about two months now, and do you know, I've been seeing this go on and assuming that it's the same woodlouse coming and going. Except it probably isn't, is it? Does anyone know if this is a sign of an infestation and do I need to get on to my landlord?  :scowl:

I wouldn't worry about the odd one - Be a bit concerned if there were 100s of em maybe! I don't think they live too long in a typical house; they are creatures of damp dark places - I hope I aint just described your hosue there!

Pesky little blighters.
I've always believed that they eat their own poo, at least that's what I've told my three year old daughters.
They are crustaceans I believe.

We have had them for yrs, old house on the edge of a wood, they love damp. They come indoors to die, not much anyone can do to stop them :sorrysign:

Trent

This is reassuring. Parts of the house are pretty damp, but my own room where I and more importantly my trains spend time is kept dry. Perhaps there's a way to get the lice on a treadmill to power the layout?

Mine came in yesterdie :-X

Seriously, though, Potts is quite right. I get them coming into my bathroom purely so they can go legs up, it strikes me. Easily vacuumed up, though.

In most house not a problem, and most houses have them.

They like rotting wood however so worth finding out if they are just lost or infesting some bad wood somewhere in the house.

OwL

They like damp or damp conditions. I get a couple normally in autumn time but nothing major. I use news paper (rolled up) to dispatch them. If you've found an entry point to your dwelling, drop some Ant powder down (not much) around their entry routes....... They wont bother you again.
Obviously avoid making places they like. For instance a friend of mine stored fire wood outside his kitchen door for easy access. He had loads getting into his pantry. He moved fire wood and problem went. They don't tend to infest, they are just a pesky nuisance........

Heres some general advice I found on-line:

Usual disclaimer about having nothing to do with firm in the link. it's just general info.

I like woodlice are nice.

I am Overlord of a small colony in the small compost heap in our small garden, they are harmless and roll themselves into balls when they feel threatened and otherwise assist in producing top-quality compost.

Well I didn't bring them with me, and while none of them seem to be carrying any form of ID I presume they're from around here.

Actually I have heard they may like to nibble at the roots of certain plants, but they seem happy with the compost and I rarely find one straying.

I believe that they were substituted for lobster during the war
I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left...
