I was having a trawl through the Liverpool site, and found these

http://www.ehattons.com/74811/Dapol_2D_021_001_Class_156_2_car_DMU_156508_in_Strathclyde_Passenger_Transport_livery/StockDetail.aspx

now they only came into service in 1987, and I'm aiming my layout at 1986  :hmmm:

a 150 would of course be more correct, but they are £144.46, pre-order

I could get nearly two sets of the 156s for that, and they could run the Rule 1 service from GLQ to Inverknockie [loosely based on Inverness] vie the 'it was actually built' line from Ft. William.

and it's a great colour scheme............

what should I do  :hmmm:   >:D

Either aim your layout at 1987, or tell anyone who cares that they are carrying out pre-golive testing.

One of the nicest Post-Privatisation liveries. Unfortunately for you the Carmine & Cream SPT livery wasn't introduced until 1996/7 (replacing the previous Orange and Black livery) so it's a decade outside your period...  :'( :(

What have I ever done to you? I promised myself "no more rolling stock of any kind 'till there is some track laid." Then you go and post a link to one of the best looking setups ever to hit the rails. Gee, thanks! There goes my resolve. OK, my resolve is as tough as a Victoria sponge, but..... Oh, never mind! I'm fighting it, but thanks, I suppose...
;)  ;)  ;)  :thankyousign:
"When in trouble, when in doubt, run (trains) in circles..." etc.
There, doesn't that feel better?
Lovely!

I may appear to be listening to you, but inside my head, I'm playing with my trains.

Or run your layout as a preserved line and then anything goes !

I managed to acquire a very nice scenic layout of Calne for a very modest fee - and there is all sorts of stuff running on that now.
Even the real preserved lines have a "Rule One".
