As I'm new to the hobby I tried all the magazines for a couple of issues. In the end I went for Pecos Railway Modeller. It suits me. I think the thing that swung it was a bit about the Great Eastern, also the back issues online (I subscribe to the paper version, I dislike reading a mag online as my only way, the same as I won't get a Kindle I like a book or mag in my hands).

Also a fan of the N Gauge Journal a very good read.
I keep forgetting to add Cheers Mike on the end of my posts....

So.....  Cheers Mike

I buy them if they have something in that interests me, which generally means a layout set in recent (sectorisation or privatisation) eras.  Very often there is nothing in that fits.

IIRC "Model Rail" when it was part of "Rail" only covered "modern" topics, and I think the pull-out modelling section of Rail Express still does - but "modern" covers 60s and 70s layouts and locos, which are a bit old-fashioned for me, so even then there might be nothing of interest.

I have thought that there might be a market for a "modern only" magazine (even if it did cover green and blue diesels) but I reckon the rise of the internet - including this forum - have probably put paid to that.

There are plenty of prototype 'modern' only railway mags including 'Rail Express' that has a 40 page modelling section included. Also there was a modern modelling mag a few years back - MRM - but it folded after about six issues.

I read the Railway Modeller it's published by PECO. Although I was a bit dissapionted in this months issue it only had just 1 n gauge layout in it but the Editors bit was interesting Especialy going through about 40 pages of online retail advertisement the editor says at the end to support your local model shop  :D.

I always enjoy Railway Modeller as, even if there's not an N gauge layout featured, many ideas can be transferred across. After getting Steve Flint (RM Editor) to judge our Photographic Competition and having exchanged many mails with him, the solution to getting more N gauge in RM lies with us - the N gauge modellers, so don't be afraid to send anything in. We have had at least 2 of our members layouts featured in the mag

As well as the N Gauge Journal that comes with my subscription, I also regularly bought both Railway Modeller and Model Rail. Even though at times there may not be a lot of N gauge content I still look at them just for ideas and to gain a wider perspective on the hobby.

At one time I kept many back issues but due to lack of room at home I now only buy a current magazine only if it contains something of relevance to me.

I have bought all of the modelling magazines mentioned at one point or another now I only get them if there is a layout or article that is relevant. Other than that I have more or less given up with them all mainly because they all have a GWR steam era bias which is totally opposite the era and regions which I model am sure if they could get away with it a couple of the mags would be GWR modelling magazine!

Kind regards

Dave

. . . . they all have a GWR steam era bias . . . .

Unfortunately and sadly that does seem to be the case. A bit more variety and a wider range of eras wouldn't go amiss for some.

Whilst I echo the sentiments, surely it is in the hands of the N gauge modellers to provide RM and other mags with layouts other than GWR?
We have had (fairly recently) Elvinleys 'Black Sheep Lane' and Mainlines 'The Circle Line' neither of which are GWR featured in RM so at least members of the NGF are doing their bit

Hi,
Model Rail from 2008. A good amount of N gauge, enough N gauge layouts (I remember some beauty in BR blue and modern era), a lot of "how to do", some articles about real railway or steam/diesel loco, news, reviews, tips & tricks...
As every other mags sometimes is boring (can be happen...), sometimes it's amazing... but it depends to my interests in that moment.
I have appreciate in particular some articles to highlight some strengths of N gauge as "home dimension layout"... lot of in little space... DCC improvement in N...

For me it's N'spirations and the N Gauge Journal only, as they focus exclusively on N. However, I do buy the occasional back issue of Railway Modeller when I find out that it features something specific that I'm hoping to model.

Perhaps GWR BLTs are more likely to be selected and published and eaten. After all they are damn fine tasty sarnies :D

I am a bit of a silly Billy when it comes to model railway mags, I have bought 3 this month and I was pleasantly surprised with this months Hornby Magazine, I am trying to work out what would be the best to get on a subscription and yet not found one that would really make me say thats the one, only because they are all good with plenty of reading, but I just hate the adverts in some of them especially when you can not read the text, do they not realize if we cannot read what they are selling we will not buy it.. DOH

Hi newportnobby

I wasnt just meaning GWR n gauge its a GWR bias in all gauges I am fairly new to N-gauge and have found the modern era is better represented in N next time iam at the shops i shall count the GWR layouts in the modelling mags I only get the odd one now but i think every mag has something GWR every month.
In many ways it would be better if there was a GWR only mag if it meant less GWR in the other mags there was a modern modelling mag out a few years ago but it fell by the wayside
