The BBC iPlayer has this excellent programme from the Timeshift series about the history and uses of the diesel engine.

It includes submarines, ships, cars, tractors etc. and of course trains and I enjoyed it tremendously, and not just for the presenter having a go at driving 03066 (the 1:1 version, not the Farish model) at Barrow Hill.

It also goes to show that programmes like this don't have to have any input from the Clarkson / May / Hammond brigades which is refreshing in itself.

Great viewing for us boys and girls of all ages.

Excellent show. I do like Mark Evans as a presenter. His previous series about building cars and such were very entertaining.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

That was an excellent series. I especially took a great interest when he built the Robinson helicopter as one of my friends and I looked into building a Robinson R22. Sadly he got married and was never heard from again.

Cheers John.

Excellent show, Mark Evans is a great host for this kind of program. Very interesting insight into the humble Diesel engine.

Watched this film last evening and found it very interesing.

Having built many diesel engines and overhauled injection systems over the years it was a wonderful insight into the larger engines, especially the container ship!

As a young man I experienced the sight of watching an engineer appearing out of one of the cylinders of a diesel engine on an old liner, he rose majestically standing atop a piston!

Anyway thanks for the tip.

Peter.
