There has been some interesting "non-model railway" threads on this Forum recently, "1st experience of Computers" and "Favourite Tipple" to mention just two.

My wife says I am "playing" when I dissappear into my model railway storeroom, but there are a few indoor house games that we regularly play together with friends and which we enjoy, so I thought I would mention 3 of them on here to see if they are popular elsewhere.

Once a week we have a get together with our neighbours in each other's apartments in turn to play either :- "Mexican Train", "Rummikub", or "Uno".

"Mexican Train" uses coloured dice and can be played with any number of players from 2 upwards, "Rummikub" is a skilfull game for 2 to 4 people using numbered tiles, and "Uno" a simple card game.

We usually start playing at about 7.30pm and finish about Midnight, and it is always "bring a bottle or beer" for the visitors that night.

The misses and I do enjoy these little get togethers, and the games are never taken too seriously, and we always have a good laugh and natter with each other before saying goodnight.

Do you attend any little "Soirees" where you play games - and if so what do you play (I am talking indoor games, and not "wife swapping" or other such similar activities).

For me it would have to be past tense, I don't interact with many "others" these days except the local N gauge area group twice a month, and next door neighbours in passing or on line in forums.

I used to enjoy card games especially bridge (up to regional area competition standard) and cribbage, I have played both online but not recently, I also enjoyed Scrabble.

I was always a keen pub games chap, and used to play darts and table football for a league in Northampton. The table football used a Lilliput open topped table (none of that glass covered rubbish) and had strict rules e.g. you couldn't score with the middle set of players. We also used to have skittle evenings but that kind of skittles was an oddball peculiar to Northamptonshire/Leicestershire whereby you threw wooden (later plastic) 'cheeses' to knock down 9 pins (about 10" high) stood in a diamond formation on a table with a net at the back of it. I wonder if it still exists in any of the Northampton pubs :hmmm:
Probably not as everything nowadays is Sky Sports and games are rarely played apart from the odd burst of dominoes maybe

Forgot about darts, used to play in the local clubs league, only ever threw a 180 twice. (at least we played proper darts, double in and double out, not the streamlined "keep the punters glued to their seats" televised events where they skip the double in)

We have an intra-village skittles league, but it's the type with the long alley you throw balls at pins on.  The kids seem to love it  ::)  Not heard about it for a while; might be a summer recess I suppose ...

When I was in the service Uckers was always popular (The naval version of Ludo with more competitive rules) and we also used enjoy Risk the world domination game, but these days living on my own and working shifts I do not get much of a chance for social game playing outside of Model Railways of course.

I used to play Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary on Boxing Day with family and friends. Now I just go to the football, it's less violent and there isn't as much swearing  :D

Do love cribbage but it's hard to find fellow players.

We've moved recently and don't really know anyone so we play 'where's the remote' and whoever loses gets the computer mouse!

You must have a really different view of what's on TV to us - it's the other way around here  :P  Can't stand soaps or the (un)reality crap ...

Cribbage.  I will be going on a narrow boat for the weekend with some mates in a couple of weeks.  The cribbage board will be going.

I enjoy Bridge partnered by wife, playing at Reading U3A when we can get the time. Also playing with friends some Saturdays.

Agree :) Too many times losing as a child resulting in Monopoly board "taking flight" across the room and one child with the severe hump sulking on his bed  :D

Weave, have you tried

or any of the other games, can we find 4 for Bridge?

Thanks Mike,

Just had a quick look at the site and looks interesting. Will have a proper look tonight.

Have played Whist a long time ago so can't remember much. Remember Bridge seemed rather daunting.

As for Monopoly. Been that child too. Landed on Park Lane with a hotel on it and next go Mayfair with a hotel on it much to my sister's glee. Big row, board overturned to reveal my two cousins had been stealing money from the bank and stashing it under the board. We all got in trouble.

Great days.

Cheers weave.
