Now, this is annoying!  I go to install a prog from the net and all goes fine.  I hit run and it tells me, immediately, 'There is a new version of this application available - Do you wish to download and install it now?'  This has happened twice today with different software.  Why could they not install the correct version in the first place?

RATFINKS!

Some people are just too lazy to update their sites.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

RATFINKS!
Quite so !

I do not normally install software whilst still connected to the interwebby, (practicing safe hex)
once installed I disable any 'check for update', just incase a site gets hijacked, before re-connecting anytime soon and certinly not before a thorough evaluation ( like prompts to reconnect)

Yea, all very clever, pat myself on the back,
recently installed a new version of  get_iplayer, and to my horror the installation process informed me "installing , blah, VLC  blah blah .dll whathave you " argh, I forgot to dis. (insert dumbo age excuses etc )
The good news - all was ok in the end,
the bad news, yep you guessed, the retrieved version of VLC was not the latest one !!

Raises a glass to Zog  :beers:

My pet hate is when you want to install a program, like Adobe ... And it, by default installs Chrome or Google Toolbar unless you tick the required box.

Adobe !!

Ah yes, I have heard that CNET is the devil for that sort of thing avoid CNET Always go to the orig author site if available, else sourceforge / github etc.

Another pet hate is when you follow a link to install software, there is usually a very obvious DOWNLOAD button, which is nothing to do with the product you want, but leads to some PC cleaner product or service. The real download button is much more subtle.

seconded !

Nearly got caught a few times myself, nick of time realise that it is an advert, usually? by via google?
another good reason to avoid download sites like Softronic ( < not as pernicious as CNET )

Use the likes of Softronic etc. to find interesting freewares, but download your found software from more reputable sites.

Hi,

I am sure you probably know this already.... but just in case windows 10 standard installation has the privacy options all set to sharing.... easily remedied from the settings tab if, like me, you want more privacy as standard.
