I wonder if those in the know could put me on the straight and narrow re the roofs on blue class 47.

My interest is the standard blue livery finished locos - so leaving aside things like Stratford paint finishes; LL liveried specimens; "specials".

My Qs is about the paint finish on the roofs of these standard blue locos.

The bodyside blue seems to be carried up over the roof, taking in vents, radiator grills etc.  is that correct?
Then the area over the cab seems to be either black or blue.  How does that work?  Is it time period, location, chance or is there some system?

The Farish blue 47 comes with a completely blue "top" including the cab roof - but photos I've seen seem to suggest some carried black above the cabs.

I would be very grateful to receive some insight into this aspect of loco detail - not least because I do tend to adopt the helicopter view of models!!

Thanks very much

I think you will find that the black cab roof areas is actually just dirt rather than black paint, they were all over blue as far as I know.

There must be something about getting that Geordie model which makes us think the same thing

The bits which aren't blue represent fibreglass panels to let light in although these quickly fouled up with grime and dirt.

Thanks for giving me that link Dan - you're absolutely right!

I wonder if this thread could be stopped, given I've now got the link to the August 2014 postings?

Best regards
