I have recently brought the 1984 Practical Model Railway Magazines, some of which have features on how to make locos using parts from other locos and super detailing all these features are by Bernard Taylor, who apparently is the same person from T.P.M,

I have studied them all with great interest, The class 40, he made from a class 37 and some bits from other farish locos and this has become my favourite feature. he has given plenty of diagrams with measurements e.t.c

I am wondering how easy it would be to build a N Gauge class 40 from scratch using plastic card and some etches if needed. I'm going to have a long think about this and could be purchasing some plastic card

It's evidently possible if the photos of various scratch-built wonders I've seen are anything to go by. I guess it depends on how much time, patience, talent/apititude and access to tools and materials you have. I remember in my teenage years when I had more ambition than money I hit upon the idea of building my own (OO) locos somehow, but let's put it this way - beyond some amateurish hacking on some plasticard-type stuff I never got anywhere.  The ambition is however coming back, supported by somewhat more patience and away better ccess to tools and materials (but much poorer in terms of time).  Though probably anything I do will be based around 3D printing.

(Which reminds me, somewhere I have a pair of OO Class 31 bogies from the 1960s, I wonder if I could flog them to an unsuspecting soul on eBay...)

As someone who has built many wagons from scratch using plasticard I would say go for it. You have nothing much to lose only the cost of the plastic and your time. At the end of the day you will have learnt a new skill and quite probably have a new loco.

I too have those articles somewhere and they are very good.
