Dapol Westerns & provision of spare bogie.

I now have 2 of the new Dapol Westerns which I am pleased with, especially the fact that this model comes with a spare "bogie" which I think is a good idea.

Is this a new trend - providing  an extra bogie - or is it only the Westerns that have this - and if so why only this model.

I did have an issue with the 1st Western I purchased, but swapping the bogie for the spare one resolved it. I can't see any difference between the fitted bogie and the spare - unless I am missing something.

Anyone like to comment on this - I think it would be nice if other diesel locomotives - whether Farish or Dapol came with a spare bogie as I have more problems with bogies than anything else, and yes I do know that on some models (Class 66 for example) the 2 bogies are not exactly the same.

I don't have any Westerns, but having seen one I recall that it's as mentioned above - the spare bogie doesn't have the NEM pocket, which allows the front vallence to be fitted.

So far as I know this is the only Dapol model (or any model, come to that) to have been supplied with a complete replacement bogie. There are a few Farish models supplied with a spare bogie frame (Deltic, prototype Deltic, and - so somebody said when I asked on here - Western). Certainly in the case of the Deltic, this is identical to the ones on the loco and seems to be supplied so that you can cut off the loops which the NEM pocket clips to as part of detailing one end of the loco, but still have a spare bogie frame if you want to put a coupling back on that end in future. Quite how they decided which classes of loco to supply this spare frame with is unclear!

I've noticed this too. My feeling is that the 'Western' will be something of a high water mark for Dapol, in part thanks to Dave Jones and his extensive interaction with the modelling community. A lot of love went into it. The replacement bogie, the etched brass nameplates, even the red and white pipes underneath the model that you can't normally see!

A lot of Dapol's most recent stuff has been reissues of older models. It'll be interesting to see whether the next big diesel from Dapol is furnished to the same sort of standards. Or for that matter, whether DJM Models will be the ones to push the bar even higher in the future.

They do look good - it I were to get one it would be a definite 'rule 1'! Have to say that I think the 67 is even better though - I've got several of these and they really are excellent models.

I was less than impressed by the noisiness of my early model Class 66; perhaps a 67 might be on the cards instead! Is the Class 67 nice and quiet? Or a growler like the Dapol 66?

As/when a D1015 'Western Champion' model comes out, then you won't need to push Rule 1 at all. It's even done the odd freight run.

To be honest they vary! One of mine is pretty noisy, although it runs fine.

I have 2 Dapol Class 67s - a Schenker model & the EWS liveried one - both are nice quiet runners and I like them a lot. Pulling power on them seems good too.

I am often called "Tel" or "Tes", and very seldom Terry (except by my wife - especially when she wants something, and Canarians).

At Grammar school I was knicknamed "Johnny" after a Teacher once called me a "Paleface Johnny" after turning up for a lesson quite pale and poorly one day.

I was christened Terry David Makinson by the way (not the Irish Terrence), as sometimes people do call me Terrence - but I am English (My Username by the way is my initials).

In Tenerife, when I go to the local Hospital for regular blood tests, the nurse always confirms my name my calling me by my christian name Terry, and never by my Surname.

Out of interest a person here usually has 2  "surnames", not a middle name & a single surname, so I am sometimes called Terry David as though David was my surname.
