remove or fade weathering on a card building?

I went a bit mad on weathering the depot...

is there a way I can remove or fade the weathering? I used humbrol wash and powders. would a light grey wash or total repaint of the roof help? I was aiming for something more subtle than this but it went wrong...

Have you tried airbrushing a lighter shade of the roof colour? Perhaps with some matt varnish on top? I find airbrush weathering covers a multitude of sins, particularly dust or grime shades.

how about very light grey watered down and then airbrushed on the roof???

if all else fails I can just completely re-paint the roof with a brush.

I've always used enamels on card. I'm always worried watery paint will cause the card to "puff" a bit as the water soaks in. But enamels seem to go on more "dusty" and flat, which I think looks nicer. Definitely try both out yourself. Presumably you have some off-cuts of the card you used left over. Maybe paint (well or badly!) to mimic what you've done to the depot, then airbrush that first.

FWIW, I don't the roof looks wrong at all. But some sort of layer to blend it all together might help. If you think about it, a tin roof might rust, but it'll also be exposed to rain and airborne grime, which will form some sort of translucent dustiness on top of the rusty metal.

Mask off and mist coat with grey primer, it'll kill the harshness of it and you can keep misting until it looks right to your eye.

I airbrushed it with a watered down dirty grey... I prefer it... still needs a bit of work I think...

same effect as the primer misting would have had really

any suggestions for the surface the depot is standing on? it's Tamiya tarmac as the minute... not sure whether to leave it or try something else... or to weather it in some way...

The yard looks a little bare so I reckon some 'clutter' would be in order. Not sure if they still existed then, but some wooden pedestrian walkways across some of the tracks may help, too

yup true, I do need a bit of clutter, barrels and a few pallets at least to start with... i'll see what I can get at tings...

I may convert the tarmac to concrete where the depot stands and the little bit out the front... at the back is grey 'gravel' so i'll leave that alone probably.

Not sure when they came in but there are all sorts of rules about hazardous materials and pollutants - so I dont thin you should have oil spills across your yard as they would have been cleaned up professionally but you can have junk, over growth, rubbish etc...

I mentioned in another thread that Womens eye blusher is excellent for weathering and is cheeper than the weathering powders that you buy, eye blusher is under 99p off eBay from China and it arrives within 10-14 days, i have a wife and daughters who buy this regulary and i just borrow it when no one is looking for our lads layout.
Your shed looks great, and my Son wants one just like it, who produces this kit? as I need ideas for Xmas.

ok - I might convert it to cleanish concrete minus any oil spills then... i'll see if I can buy concrete paint at tings. if nothing else I think a lighter coloured surface would look good for photography and it's a change from grey or brown which most other surfaces are on my layout so far.

I do have a fuelling point but it's actually down towards the depot head-shunt so out of shot.

good tip re cheap weathering powders.

the depot building is from ebay and made by a seller called Geoff (or Jeff?), quite a few people have bought depots like this one (or same style).

Thanks, i think i may have seen this already on eBay as there is one based on Immingham. I have also seen some Walthers/Heljan sheds available in the States which are plastic and look similar and would be the correct length for a class 40/45/46. still got 4 months to find something.

Re origin of the 2 model buildings in the photos - thought they looked familiar ! The guy on Ebay who used to make & sell a lot of this modern style of depot/warehouse type buildings (OO & N gauge ) is/was "jeff0052" BUT I see that he has no feedback on there as a seller for over 6 months , so it looks like he may well have packed up .
