Richard @ N'Tastic Scale Models

I am researching ready to do another Kickstarter in September and was wandering if anyone could help with some ideas of what vehicles ran with the Ransomes and Rapier 45 Ton Steam Cranes.

The crane we are doing is suitable for GWR, SR, LNER and BR LMR. I have a good idea for GWR but am struggling with the others.

We are also doing the other wagons in our stretch goals from last time including the Continuous Welded Rail Train, SR Brakes, LNER/NER wagons. These will hopefully be joined 4 crane support coaches/vans.

So please if you can help please PM or post details here.

If you already have plans for the GWR then that suits me nicely.  :thankyousign:

Let me know what the kickstarter is running as I would like a breakdown crane.

Well, that's just not good enough. Some fount of all knowledge you are!   ;)

For GWR I am planning on these 2 or similar based on drawings.

Pretty much all either custom one offs or standard bogie coached sometimes sawn about a bit.

SR recycled various pregroup coaches and BR(S) likewise had stuff like modified LSWR ironclads - for which we should be very greatful as it meant they made preservation.

I plan to do a couple of the Ironclad conversions but as with the others drawings are basically nonexistent as far as I can tell.

It is interesting that you are planning another Kickstarter project.   Given the delays on your first one, do you still think this is a viable product development strategy?

Until the 1970's when a number of breakdown support vehicles were replaced by fairly standard conversions from Mk1 coaches, as EP said most were one off conversions from anything suitable.

Hi David

The delays are hopefully coming to an end and it has been a huge learning curve. The next one will hopefully go better as I now have suppliers in place that can do what they promise. I originally intended using 3D printing though out but then decided that it was not good enough. The 1st cast kept making promises but never delivered, so I moved on to another who was slow to get going but does seem to be producing results now. I will not start another Kickstarter Project until I have delivered the first one.

Thank you to the rest of you for your advice.

Hello Richard

Sorry I hadn't noticed this post before.

I've looked in Peter Tatlow's book Railway Breakdown Cranes: v.2 but while there are plenty of photos of the crane there aren't any of the support vehicles.

Best regards
Michael

Thank you Michael
I have that book now a few vague leads in it. I think I will go for a modified bogie coach for the LM region, I'll discuss this with my designer on Friday. NER / LNER I have my ideas for that and will post a query on the other forum for that. Southern I am waiting on a book due this week hopefully.

You're welcome Richard

What material are you going to produce the crane in?

I vote for etched brass :)

Hi Michael
Not sure yet, probably a mixture of 3D printed, etched and resin parts. Which region will you be interested in?

Hi Richard

Good luck with your ongoing projects.  Re the Continuous Welded Rail train, have you seen that a 3D printed model in N is being produced by RBE - one of the contributors to RM Web.

Might it be worth considering pooling your resources?

cheers

Ben A.

Hello Richard

I'd go for a GWR version.

3D printed shell with brass overlay?

Best regards
Michael
