Friends,

It isw one ofr those situations that do not arise very often!

The large Telegraph General Knowledge crossword usually baffles me and I give up because I simply cannot find the answers.

This week both my wife and I have managed for the first time ever to get to the point of not being able to answer just ONE question to complete the grid!

I wondered if our combined brain cells might come up with something?

The clue is:- Space on the reverse of a coin below the main design for the date?

We have wound up with the letters E_E_G_E !

Any ideas would be most welcome!  Unfortunately we couldn't try for the £200 prize because we have cerossed out two words and changed the spelling!  :'(

Warmest regards, Peter.

(Google is your friend)

Thankyou very much!  We tried a Google search but got very bogged down in numismatism  and Key dates instead !

Regards, Peter.

Hi Peter, I assume you found :-

Exergue
- The small space beneath the base line of a subject engraved on a coin or medal. It usually contains the date, place, engraver's name, etc., or other subsidiary matter.

I also attempt that Crossword and generally have to look loads up. I find that adding the word 'crossword' or 'Sat Tel GK' to a search helps - sometimes it brings up a crossword solver site where others have asked the same question ;)

I had to look up exergue too :D
Just one Pendolino, give it to me, a beautiful train, from Italy
