Ahoy chaps. With my Streamlined Coronation project ongoing, I come to the thorny issue of paint.
My current plan is the standard halfords grey acrylic primer, followed by railmatch acrylic bauxite to approximate the apparently very important red oxide undercoat on the originals.
Then the Crimson Lake... which is where it starts to get really complimicated it would appear. My preference is for brush painted acrylics... but which one for the top coat?
Humbrol RC403 or Railmatch 2306?
Intention is to finish it with gloss acrylic clear over the top.

Halfords do a close match will look it up later. PM if I forget.

I'm lead to believe it's 'damask red' or something along those lines (although there seem to be plenty of arguments about that too...).
I would rather brush paint if possible, as I live in a small flat and would rather minimise the fumes to the primering if possible...

That's something I hadn't considered at all, using a prototypically accurate undercoat. Thanks, Luke. I've added it to my future paints shopping list.

Crimson lake properly is a varnish so its quite hard to get the look right. You definitely want a good reddish undercoat if using the railmatch enamel on top but I find that does give the best result as it has some of the depth and 'sheen' of the real thing where it's richer than the flatness of plain painting.
