Can anyone please help me. I want to theme my new layout in the 40's- 50's. Where do I find out about the sorts of engines and carriages / rolling stock that were in service at that time? How do I link that information to the models avaiable. I really like the look of the BR MK1 carriages and rolling stock but don't want to end up with something not period. The setting is the kent coast with a small branch line and a stock yard servicing coastal defences.
In anticipation, .......    Bandy

Hi there,

You could do worse than looking on Wikapaedia and put in the search for train coaches etc. You'll find plenty of information there.
If you know the class of the locos you want to look at, again, you'll find information on them as above i.e. where they ran etc.

Also, on the Hattons website (N gauge part), in the main, the locos and rolling stock are divided by period eras i.e. 1-9; 1 being the earliest and 9 being modern. The eras (i.e. the years referred to are clear within the website)

Obviously when you say 40s/50s it's dependent on whether you wish to model pre BR or post BR which may also influence your modelling decisions. Good luck on whatever you decide to model :D

Try the Southern E-Group. They have loads of info on the Southern Railway.

Mike's Railway History is a bit earlier. Up to 1935. http://mikes.railhistory.railfan.net/home.html
David Hey's excellent website is a bit later. http://www.davidheyscollection.com/

The early BR period may suit you - 1948 to the mid 50's. Lots of experimental liverys and loco from different regions be tested on other regions, so lots going on and plenty of n gauge stock to choose from. Most common liverys are black or green for the locos and red & cream for the coaches. If you want accuracy, you'll need to bury your head into some books/internet for while...    Here is a pic of a loco with the early BR logo and the red & cream coaches i mentioned.

If it's got rails... you have my full, undivided attention - Steam, diesel and electric, 'tis all good !
