Waddingtons' Railroader...

Anyone else out there remember this board game? Four players building railroads in the Wild West?

A friend of mine bemoaned ages ago that he hadn't played it for years, so we dug it out of the deepest recesses of our loft and took it round for New Year's Eve. Great fun had by all...

My copy is 50 years old, near as dammit, but all the pieces were still there...

Anyway, when we were packing up, I looked at the track with more attention than the vino had allowed before. A light went off in my head, and I asked, "anyone got a ruler?" My friend disappeared off to measure the gauge, and came back with... you guessed it... 9mm!

I never knew Waddingtons were into plastic American outline N gauge... Operated by dice...

I've never played that but I do remember (and still have) The Great Game of Britain which is all about travelling around Britain by rail.

I used to have the Railroader game many moons ago but it disappeared in a house move :'(
Then my sister bought me a complete set for my 50th so once again I am able to dynamite other railroads tracks

Yup - if I remember correctly you have to place them at the end of the current track before you can start adding track pieces. Sort of an 'all clear' in case Indians are lurking in wait

Still got mine bought by my parents for me way back at xmas 1968 (according to the tag inside). It sits in the wardrobe alongside my old Totopoly, Risk, Careers, Formula 1, Monopoly, Wembley, Escape from Colditz and Escalado. Probably others. The Wembley was originally my Dad's and has 3rd Div North and 3rd Div South it's that old

These sorts of game were regularly played at home during Christmas when my cousins visited. Ahhh the heavy smell of nostalgia creeps in

I just don't want to look at how many board games are in our house....

Actually we resurrected the board game Christmas tradition (like trainsdownunder's post) a few years ago and normally have a game on Christmas afternoon. Game of choice is Go - which I see lurking near the top of Bealman's pile!

Thanks, Nick - yeah I used to like that game more than Railroader, actually.

If you look carefully, you may also see something else lurking there... just above the Formula 1 game is a Triang Minic Motorways car racing set! It came with a Porsche and Aston Marin DB4. I seem to recall building that up a bit - with a junction and a frontier post that had a clockwork barrier that went up and down.

I honestly don't know if it still works... I rescued it (and all the games) from me parents' place when they both passed away suddenly in 1990, and had it all sent to Australia. Dunno why, really - I think they've all only been played once since!

Well there's 2014's Resolution handed you on a plate - play some board games and get the Minic working!

I never had Minic - I had Airfix Motor Racing, which was very temperamental and it was eventually replaced with Scalextric.
