I have two or three locos that need to be renumbered and re-lettered. One of them is a Fowler 4F in early BR black that can serve as a Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway 4F in black (1928 livery), but I'm having a little trouble finding the right transfers.

S&DJR lettering seems to be a Times Roman-style font, coloured anything between dark yellow to gold (although yellow seems to predominate). The letters are a little longer vertically than early LMS letters, so these might not be suitable. Can anyone suggest anything that might be okay? I'm looking through the Fox Transfers website now for something...

I can let you have a couple of blank transfer  sheets  so you can make your own  :laugh3:

One way round the transfer problem I used for a Hants and Dorset bus was to print a complete panel with the name surrounded by green on self adhesive label stock , the tender side should work that way, you could try doing a copy paste of the 2P tender scale it to fit if you included the top of the tender side you'd need to do some careful cutting to follow the curved bits.cab sides should work too, but the rest of the lining probably a hand job unpess you can find straight and curved yellow lines of the right thickness. You do need to take care matching the colour you're printing with the loco paint job.

May be worth looking in model shops that do planes, cars and boats they might have something that will do for the lining.

Luckily the S&D painted most of its goods locos in unlined black after 1914, so I can get away with using an unlined early BR loco and just change the transfers. That's why I went for this particular Fowler in BR livery when I saw it was going for a bargain price. Momma din raise no fools. ;)

If early LMS lettering does turn out to be okay then that's a bonus, as there are bound to be further uses for the transfers.

Have you tried fox transfers...

Hi Chris

See first post: "...I'm looking through the Fox Transfers website now for something..."  :D

Thanks for the links. I didn't find anything that is specifically meant for the S&D on Fox's, and Replica Railways seem only to offer BR decals. Modelmaster also seem to offer just BR numbers for locos (although they have a nice offering for Grouping wagons), so it looks like it will have to be a compromise with Fox's.

So the question now is which Fox's product matches the S&D loco lettering most closely?

This firm do custom transfers, and can do them from artwork you provide, I've not used them myself so can't comment on the results

I've used them several times. Very good service, very quick (sent and paid on one day, received next am!) and very helpful. Decal resolution is 600dpi so good but not stunning. I've had sharper custom decals from Railtec but they cost a fair bit more and they took a lot lot longer.

Thanks for the links and advice, chaps. I think 'cost a fair bit more' means that I'll have to pause this line of enquiry until next month, especially as I've just discovered the large selection of extra detailing items for loco that's available from N Brass (plus your own shovels and picks and toolboxes, Alan). I think it would be worth getting all of these in one go, along with the transfers, and doing a full upgrade on a loco.

For this month I can practice my painting and upgrading efforts on wagons, which is always a good place to start. There are coal loads to add and some renumbering to be done. And perhaps the first attempts at weathering, too. More on the loco work next month, hopefully.

There may not be many Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway modellers out there, especially in N Gauge, but I have some good news for you if you're 'one of us'.

I've been working with Railtec Models for almost a year now to have specific S&DJR transfers produced in N Gauge. The good news is that the first of them, the freight pack, is almost ready.

More news here when I have it, but given the length of development for these transfers, it will be great if Railtec can get a few sales from this set. I have no commercial connection with them. I've just been researching and sending them lots and lots of information to get the best transfers possible. They're very nice people, and very helpful, and they've bent over backwards to accommodate all my needs for this set, so the least I can do is help publicise the transfers.

Well, it looks like my approval this morning was enough. The S&DJR freight set is available to buy now:
