Friends,

I know that as I get older my faculties suffer but for the life of me as I study images on Ebay I cannot tell the difference between this:-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-N-Gauge-Farish-Caledonian-57ft-non-corridor-Suburban-Coach-N-Gauge/360761474924?rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D18220%26meid%3D1996469364710671736%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D8339%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D2%26sd%3D261305351948%26

And this:-

Is it merely the colour, (Don't forget I am colourblind!) or the logo or the wheelbase or something else?

Perhaps it is merely the label on the box!

not my era, but they do look alike to me.  apart from the "Caledonian" has white by the windows and the GWR has cream.  Cant see the crest's in enough detail to see if they are identical, they probably shouldn't be.

It has the word 'Rare' in the title. and in the ebay rules that means add atleast 50% to the bids.

Also, KJB models have some very fair prices on their second hand models with buy-it-now auctions. I have had a few things from them that I know would probably have gone for twice the amount on a regular bidding auction in a private sale. It took me a while to find because I usually hide the buy-it-now listings but KJB are definitely worth a look.

As far as I can see they are both Farish 57' suburban coaches probably original Poole stock, the only difference is the livery, the same shell was produced in LMS, SR, LNER and GWR liveries for many years, some were done in Caledonian livery when the Farish 4P was produced in Caledonian livery, this IIRC was not as common as the main grouping liveries hence the "rare" in the  description; Farish also did the 4P in Somerset and Dorset livery, I think they did 4 wheel coches to go with that,

As far as I am aware, the 4P never appeared in Caley nor S&D liveries on the real railway. The nearest in apearance was the 2P used on the S&D, that ws slightly smaller and did not have outside cylinders, so quite a few models lost their cylinders to "pass" as 2Ps. A few 4Ps were trialled on the S&D in the 1920s in LMS livery, but rarely appeared after that.

Its a generic fictional coach produced in various liveries. A corridor coach and brake where produced along with a non-corridor and brake.

The corridor coach is roughly based on the SR Maunsell coaches (but with the wrong roof and some other oddities), and can be turned into a passable R1 Maunsell.

The non-corridor one resembles a wide range of similar stock that many companies ran.

The roof on both types is an odd choice being more LNWR than anything else, something the rest of the coach doesn't in fact represent in the slightest.

Thankyou for the comment.

As it is I have just ordered 2 of these carriages from KJB at only £8.99 each as opposed to the £16.00 on the Ebay "Caledonian" coach!

Regards, Peter.

You're welcome. Glad to be of service.

Farish produced the 4P in Caledonian Blue with matching coaches in brown and white about 1980-ish. Pretty sure they also did a S&D version- there are some S&D 4-wheelers on eBay at the moment in blue with yellow lining. The coaches were the generic "Suburban" stock of the time.
