So with the purchase of 8 radius 3 curves and 4 straights I've set up a little test track and got the models out of storage.

First thing to try was an eBay Farish class 56 that I bought in my 'collecting' phase so I've never run it. A quick look underneath shows it has been oiled at some stage so I thought I'd give it a quick test.
Well, I must say I'm surprised at how noisy it is and how the slow speed running isn't great - just hoping this gets better with a proper oiling and running in.

Next up is another eBay Farish class 90 this again looks like it has been run at some stage so I thought again I'd give it a quick blast. It runs like one of the bogies is derailed at slow speed with an almost constant clunking noise and with a little pressure you can feel it's like a wheel isn't quite round or seated properly. Lifting the dodgy bogie up it just feels to be running really clunky.

So, on to old faithful a minitrix A4, straight out of the box it gives great slow speed running, preferring the curves to the straights (the straights are 2nd hand, curves are new) a quick dab of cleaner and the straights are fine too.

So a large servicing / repair bill I reckon on the Farish items. Next up I reckon is the class 20 followed by the 08 before I look in the other boxes to see what I actually have followed by a sort out of all the old stock that I no longer want / need.

I'm guessing by split gear it's where the gear joins the shaft it's split etc my Farish class 20 looks to be pretty bad also with the wheels completely jammed and several of the gears appearing split :( time to sell off some old stock to pay for repairs I reckon.

The class 90 will probably have split an axle gear - its not a hard fix. The class 20's usually spit wheel gears or some of the Bachmann ones split all the small gears between the axles.
