I'm looking into backdateing some Farish class 37 shells, which have the refurbished nose side grilles on them.

checked on TPM and he did do the refurb ones as an etch, but doesn't seem to do the original ones.

is it a case of smoothing off parts of the refurb grilles or do I need to source new ones ?

any advice appreciated

I presume the bodies you have are the old Poole ones? TPM did do a conversion and detailing kit for this but I think its' been withdrawn with introduction of Farish's new unrefurbished 37 a few years ago. It does involve filling and smoothing over the existing grilles and applying the etches over. TPM also did replacement resin nose ends for unrefurbished locos. The n gauge society shop may have some  of both left and maybe BH Enterprises too.

The refurb grilles were introduced to enable modellers to convert the new unrefurbished 37.

Hope that wasn't too confusing!

Hi Carl,

the bodyshells I'm looking to backdate are the 37431 Intercity, 37429 ?? Regional Railways, and Transrail ones. AFAIK they are the early china built bachfar ones.

I've got 37038, 37238 and 37254 bodyshells I can renumber, and I've got some of TPMs replacement noses, but I need to convert some non lighted ones into split headcode ones, using the TPM noses

I'll try BH on my restdays and see if they've any left.

cheers

As Farish are continually releasing new Class 37, I am simply sourcing suitable candidates for the existing 37/4 - 37/5 - 37/7 body shell
It's not perfect, but it's closer than the 37/0
Over time I will then dispose of these

I would suggest a simple renumbering in the short term, and instead source either of the new DCC version 37/0 to be base the actual model you want to create

As an example I am about to renumber my Class 37 in Triple Grey Metal to 37423
When the Large Logo Blue 37/4 DCC version is released I will then replace this
Hopefully Farish will release a 37/4 in Triple Grey livery which will become an alternative

Some renumbering suggestions :
37431 InterCity Mainline livery
This locomotive was allocated to Inverness 03/93 to 03/94, exactly as the model is prepared
I don't plan to modify mine in any way, but will be weathering it based on two photos from that period
This could easily be renumbered to any other 37/4 in InterCity Mainline livery, the only members of the sub-class to carry this version of the livery, but you would also need to remove the Petroleum sub-sector logos

There are then plenty of examples based at both Eastfield and Inverness that carried this livery from 1988 and 1990 respectively onwards

37429 Regional Railways
This could be modified to the SCOTRAIL version, but this more towards the mid-1990s

However, as BachFar versions the noses CANNOT be removed, so the TPM nose ends cannot be swapped over
Modification would require quite some serious modification to the bodyshell
As above, I would look at simple renumbering or repainting in the short term, with replacement of the entire model in the long-term with more appropriate models

I must be confused, as the ones I've already stripped I have removed the nose ends, which were just located with four pins, so that I just stripped the paint from the rest of the shell.

I know the lighted ones are more difficult to remove, and presumeably the TPM noses would not match the profile of the bodyshell of these later ones.

I'll have another check tuesday when I finish nights.
