Thanks mate,

QuoteIs it NSE or possibly for the new HS2?lol

:D

Well the cynical part of me (or should that be CYLon part of me....I'll get my coat ) thinks that we will all get Vipers before HS2 is finished.

Oh, and this example has a genuine NSE red seat (see earlier in thread)  :)

Hello all,

So today I came home from a business trip and decided to see if my experiment had worked.....

....And I am glad to say that my first ever attempt at "Wasp" stripes has turned out ok  :D

OK its there is some bleed through in a few places, and at this scale it is useless to N gauge, but its a start!

And its perfectly acceptable if you are looking to re-create a small section of....

Viper Hanger Deck!

I was chuffed with the way my kit turned out, so when I noticed I had a spar bit of plasticard lying around I decided to make a mounting board for it.

The Decal Sheet even had some suitable spares which I think were made for the purpose:

All that remains now is to glue the canopy on and then see what my clear coat spray is like. This will be tested on the "Deck" before the Viper, especially useful as I want to know how the Decals react.

Stay happy all

Its been a while since I posted this thread.....

http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=11711.msg120157#msg120157

....and even longer since I took the photo that triggered the idea, but with the completion of the Viper project and the progress (so far) of the building project for Filton TMD going well, I decided to snap this up when it came up on the 'bay:

And this last picture shows the load intended for it:

....as you can see, some extra truck-deck may be needed  :hmmm:

I will say here and now, this is a long-term project. I don't anticipate getting on with this until the building approaches a more complete state.

The first thing I need to establish is, for my own personal requirements, do I need another set of wheels or maybe even another tractor unit to butcher? Either one of these will realistically require another model truck. Some careful choosing of a cut point (to insert an extension) may mean I can put this decision off until later.

Any advice most welcome

Another day, another resurrected Skyline thread.

Where I left the entry above (21 months and 1 house ago!), I had one Tomytec lorry and a locomotive awaiting collection.

The next thing I needed to do was add some length (no sniggering at the back), by cutting and shutting in another donor model.

This has now been done, as shown by the pictures below:

[smg id=30908]

[smg id=30909]

[smg id=30911]

(above not glue, but lined up for size check)

[smg id=30997]

[smg id=30998]

[smg id=30999]

Until I end up with the above status this evening.

Is is not perfect. I am still learning how to use the glue (Plastic Magic), as on a couple of joints it has seeped under the clamps I am using and left some marks, but one is under the trailer and the other should be covered by track (supporting the locomotive).

I am now at a stage when I am considering painting.

I only want to paint the trailer as the tractor unit is nice enough for me (I may add some "English" detailing). The plastic used to mould these seems to be quite a high gloss finish....should I sand it? I don't want to remove any detail?

My plan so far is to apply light coats of aerosol primer, and depending on success of that I will either spray the top coat or hand paint (I may have to use a brush for the fiddly bits around the wheels). Does anybody have any better strategy / ideas?

You could spray Klear or semi-Matt varnish onto the plastic?

Klear is an acrylic based product - available on Amazon or search NGF

Small bit of progress today.

I chopped up a suitable length of Peco track to support the load.

[smg id=31071]

Looking at prototype photos I have noticed that the track used seems to be missing sleepers.

[smg id=31069]

Happy to say that 56 059 looks quite comfy on the back of the trailer.

[smg id=31068]

And finally, with thanks to @class37025 who very kindly supplied me with a box full of loco and wagon axle sets. Here is just one of several potential uses for them, unless people think they look unsuitable?

So over the last few days I have been progressing with the painting of the trailer.

As part of the "project on a budget" part of this work, I used aerosol paints that were already "in stock".

I was a bit nervous about using these as they might have been a bit think and "drown" details. Anyway, I took my time and (weather permitting), did a coat / side each day.

Here are the results right up to yesterday:

[smg id=31961]

[smg id=31962]

[smg id=31958]

[smg id=31960]

Some small bits of white still showing around the wheels to touch-up were I was over-protective with the masking on the wheels. Given the alternative (red wheels), its a compromise I am happy with.

The track is by no means finished or even the final piece I will use, just something I am toying with.

Evening all.

So, after repairing the man cave once again (see my tantrum on the "Unhappy Thread" a month or so back), and the departure of people using it to sleep in (the nerve!), I actually did some modelling tonight.

Mainly progress with my transporter which I am actually quite happy with. I added some extra detailing front and back on the trailer and glued the track bed into place. Got a couple more bits to add and then some detailing to the "load" (AKA my old Farish 56), and then it will be added to the layout.

[smg id=33519]

[smg id=33518]

[smg id=33516]

Whilst some paint / glue was drying, I added the first of many signs to the layout itself.

Evening all.

I know we of the model railway world never really use the word "finished", but this vehicle is as close as my projects tend to get.

[smg id=34381]

I sought advice on the Forum Facebook group and the N gauge Facebook group as to the best way to secure the loco on the trailer. Feedback (including from a genuine truck driver) was that loco bogies were chained down, with restraints never going over the body (not load bearing and prone to damage).

As a result four short lengths of chain (attempted toning down included) were cut to length and secured on one end only so I can remove the loco (which is after all still functional) or replace as wanted.

[smg id=34382]

The staff at Filton TMD prepare to bid fairwell to their much loved 56059. Traction motor failure (not really, needs clean / oil) combined with the allocation of much fitter classmate 56013 makes its return to daily use very uncertain.

[smg id=34383]

As viewed from the A38, a spotter gets a last shot.

I have started noting down the bones of a potential submission to the NGS journal showing how I went about this (uncensored, I am no expert so errors included). What do fellow forum / NGS members think? Worth a go? Or not the sort of thing good articles are made of?

Skyline2uk

Defiantly worth it, I know I have net seen it done before and well it looks spot on!
Mechanical issues can be solved with a hammer and electrical problems can be solved with a screw driver. Beyond that it's verbal abuse which makes trains work!!

Skyline2uk

Cheers acko.

Must be 100% honest and say this is not my idea, I was inspired by another model / layout I saw a few years back. See this thread:

Very nice looking load & trailer! Well done.

According to Wikipedia (so possibly not 100% accurate!) a class 56 loco weighs 125 tons, meaning the lorry required to haul it would need to be STGO cat 3. If you do a google image search for 'STGO cat 3' you'll find that, whilst the majority of the tractor units in that class have 4 axles, there are some like yours with only 3.

Having said that, the maximum permitted weight per axle is 15 tonnes*, meaning that to transport a 56, you'd need a total of 9 axles. To transport something that heavy, they'd likely use a trailer with a front bogie, like this one:

I know it's a long time since you asked the question, but no one seemed to have given you an answer.

*I'm not sure if the 15t limit includes the tractor unit or not. Maybe you'd need 9 axles on the trailer alone?

Skyline2uk

Thank you for the informative response jrb

I was aware that my model would be a little "flight of fancy" (maybe my 56 has a few parts missing now and so is lighter?!).

That is why I am wondering about doing the NGS article, because I know much more prototypical models are now becoming available (using 3D printing for example)?

Skyline2uk

acko22

Put an 08 or a coach on there for an NGS article they are lighter so shouldn't be as big an issue!
