For an even nerdier reply  :laughabovepost:

The Bussard Ramscoop was created long before ST:TNG, and even ST:TOS; it dates back to 1960.  It's been used in Tau Ceti (Anderson), Known Space (Niven) which is where I first came across it, and also in Cosmos (Sagan) where I barely recall it  :confused1:

It's a very interesting piece of science ... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bussard_ramjet for detail on it.  Given the back-story on the Colonials, I see no reason why they couldn't have it as well as the Federation

I'll up the nerd count even more :D

It's Tau Zero isn't it?

Great book... recently re-read it funnily enough.

I wonder if there's a statistically significant correlation between n-gauge modellers and sci-fi nerds?

:D

Reading through this thread I think there is a lot of evidence to justify that thought  :smiley-laughing:  :smiley-laughing:  :smiley-laughing:

In the interests of balance this thread is completely lost on me ;D

Never watched space stuff really, a bit of Space 1999 if there was nothing else on, plus odd episodes of the original Star Trek but that's it. Watched the first Star Wars film (or is it the fourth now? I dunno  ) and it bored me to death :D

Having said that I'm still watching the thread as it's a plastic model kit and they're ALWAYS interesting ;) I'll get round to building my 1:144 scale SRN4 Hovercraft one day! ::)

Great book...
So it is - oops !

In my defence, never read it or much of his stuff ...  One of these days !

Most of my library is stuff like Zelazny (now there was an author ...), Weber, Niven, Gibson, Asomov, Heinlein, etc ...

You lot need to get a proper hobby. Can I suggest model railways.........  :bounce: :) :)
Whenever I write a letter to someone, I add a footnote briefly explaining Ohm's law. It's my P.S. de resistance.

Hello all,

Well, mainly to keep you nice people happy this project is progressing faster than I thought it would.

I have started applying the first actual paint today. Despite picking up a new, very cheap airbrush yesterday, I decided to brush paint these small parts. The parts in question are what would be called "gear doors" (not sure what you call them on Vipers!), and some metallic paint is used here. Modelling craft with "Gear Down" is a tradition with me, I think its because I don't like to "waste" the bits!

I make no claim for my airbrush being in the same league as some of the new ones bought on the forum, but for a plastic kit it should do the job. One day I will invest in a proper one, but that comes when the layout is much more complete and I start on the actual rolling stock modelling.

Anyway, after reading the instructions for the viper, I see that the inside of the doors are "Aluminum" and the outside, along with the rest of the underside of the viper, is white. So I think the best way to tackle it is to paint the inside of the doors when they are loose, mask them, then attach to the body and spray the assembly.

At this point I have used some "Maskol", which I bought around 5 years ago and fully expected to dry out by now. But no, its fine. This is the first time I have used this product and, it is a little tricky. It seems to dry very quickly, or at least become tacky. I hope the mask is good enough, but that depends more on me than the product!

Tomorrow I hope to spray the first white coat.

What got me with Maskol was ruining the brush used !

Skyline2uk

Ah yes, I thought this would be a problem.

I have used an old brush, but I clean it immediately in Humbrol Enamel thinners. Seems to get the stuff off quickly, even if it may not be the intended use.

Of course I would never use a new brush with this Maskol stuff, its going to gum things up eventually.

I tend to use a PVA glue spreader (like the ones in infant school) and a cocktail stick to spread maskol, i would go for landing skid doors or just as u
You said

i didn't know there where kits out there for the viper,,,,,, i might be tempted to try make one,,,

watching with interest!

Hi Skyline

Nice to see a Viper being built, and yours looks good.  Plastic model kits is the other hobby I don't find time for but love to do.  Did you manage to get rid of the dust on the primed coat?  I usually end up removing the primer and starting again or, if you are careful, using a blade to lift the bits off, then sand around the area to the plastic again.  The only trick is to get the patch to blend in again - but a good primer will hide it.  Halford plastic primer is pretty good.

These Revell kits are repops of the original Moebius kits (with better decals in the Revell kits) - there is the other Viper, and the Galactica in the range.  I hope Revell also pick up the Moebius Cylon ship and the Cylon new style centurion kit too (but that would just add to my "not-built" pile :-) )

N scale LMS 1930's and a mixture of modern stuff I could not resist...
