Based on my experience with the relatively new Dapol Pannier Tank Class 57...and being new to railway modelling I have noticed that the loco takes a good 20-30 minutes of running at various speeds to warm up.  At the end of this period you can then achieve some very smooth running, subject to the track being clean, and get down to some very low speeds without any issues.

I tend not to run it too quickly, rarely nudging past 40% my Gaugemaster Controller in the interests of realistic running speeds.

Is it generally the case that loco's will need a short period to warm up before realistic smooth running (stops & starts) can be achieved?

Thank you.

The first few times you run it maybe. If it continues to show that behaviour I'd double check you've done any necessary lubrication in the instruction sheet as transit grease can cause that behaviour.

That sounds awful, I take one of my Kato locos out of its box, plonk it on the track and can run it at crawl pace straight away.  I have never required any extended running before achieving smooth stops and starts  ;)

cheers John.

Straight from the box performance (subject to a clean track) is fine.

I've just noticed that after a period of time it appears smoother.

I'ill keep an eye on it -  :dunce:
