running in new locos question

hi all .... ive been collecting stuff for a few years now and ive just set a test track up to run in all my locos. after a while (half an hour) they get quite warm to the touch ... ive had OO gauge before and, presumably because of the larger size, ive never felt them get warm. is it normal for n gauge loco motors to generate a noticable amount of heat? the locos were the dapol class 27 and farish class 20. they both felt the same temp after the same amount of running.

As long as they are mildly warm and not roasting hot then that's normal Don't forget there's a lot less air space inside an N gauge loco so nowhere for it to dissipate like there is with 00.

I did manage to overheat a Farish HST and cook the motor, but that was after six hours of almost non-stop running pulling eight coaches and the dummy PC

I agree, if you are using a single model continuously it can get hot
However, this is very rare

For running in you should set the power at between 10% and 25% for the first 15 minutes, then repeat in the other direction
You should then set the power at between 50% and 75% for the next 15 minutes, then repeat in the other direction
Equally, remain with the model at all times, so that you can switch the power off immediately if required
