Sorry guys but I thought music was made using instruments, not computers. Am I really getting too old?

I started writing music in 2005 at the farty old age of 41 after the Gadget Show (I miss Suzy Perry) reviewed Reason.  They started by saying that an album I liked by The Prodigy had not had a single note actually recorded, and it was written on a laptop in the back of the tour bus.

I use a 60-note polyphonic MIDI keyboard but it doesn't play sounds... it just tells the computer what to play.  You can also literally write music on the screen with the mouse and press play and hey-presto you have violins, drums or guitars, whatever noise you want.  It is fascinating to do, and it's something amazing for me because I always wanted to be Jean Michel Jarre or Edgar Froese when I was a teenager but I couldn't play a note on a real instrument.

I have now 'recorded' several hours of music, some of which I am actually pleased with. Nowhere near as cool as Lucy's track though.

Without computer aided music design we would be without so many genres and songs today. EDM (electronic dance music) isn't for everyone but all of what you hear today (even rock with 'real instruments') ;) has been produced and mastered on a computer. Without the computer the final song/track would sound very muddy and not hold up to the scrutiny of a record label.

As for The Prodigy (my childhood heros), anything Liam Howlett produces is exellent!

I used a MacBook Pro, 49 key midi keyboard and an excellent pair of headphones (Pioneer HDJ-1000's) to produce that track, so basically for little money you can make good music.

I have been lucky enough to have some input and feedback on my tracks from some industry experts. Probably three of the biggest names in Trance music production.

If anyone would like a free download of my track in mp3 format, PM me and I'll send you a link.

not heard much from the Prodigy but if Im in the right mood I can enjoy them :music:. I can imagine they put on a bloody good show  :smiley-laughing:
OK who took my cake?

Ah yes The Prodigy  8)

I was driving home a few years ago when I stopped at a zebra crossing to let two old dears cross the road. As I sat there with windows down and music UP, I wondered why the said elderly ladies were giving me scowling looks, especially as I'd courteously stopped to let them cross?  ???

Only then did I realise that "Smack My female dog (changed by forum) Up" was emanating loud from the speakers  :smiley-laughing:

I get a terrible urge to filk that as "Porn on my drive", especially for desktop support hold music.  Thankfully I don't have the musical talent to do so :)

Not surprised though.  At one point, when they were cutting call centres, NTL did get a pretty bad rep for customer service and the hold time was a minimum of anhour to get a call answered.  I recall we had an engineer out to the house to fix our phone, and to test the line he had to call the same customer number as everyone else... and yes, he was on hold for over an hour! :smiley-laughing: A phone company that didn't ahve a spare line to speed up their service guys exit from a job!? :-X Never could work that one out.

Hardly needs any filking - the rest of the sound makes entire sense if you swap just that phrase. In fact it makes *more* sense.

I just acquired a pair of the headphones you recommended and they are superb.  The sound balance is excellent and the definition is the best i have heard in headphones. Thank you for that!

No probs. The only headphones that are better that i've ever experienced are Alan & Heath's but can't remember the part number. Enjoy some prodigy ;)
