For the past few days the misses has been quite poorly with a cold picked up from a holidaymaker (she has no imune system) – but she must now be feeling better as she just asked me if I would like to go on a cruise to Norway in July to see the Fjords and ride on the 2 railways which are an option of the cruise, one being the famous Flam railway.

Naturally I agreed straight away – especially as it is on one of Fred Olsens cruise liners which we like, and am currently making a booking for it before the misses changes her mind.

It's been a very good week this week - almost finished my model railway - tripod arrived to make a decent (hopefully) video of it - and the misses suggested a cruise that includes to 2 great railway journeys.

Think I might have a few beers tonight to celebrate - already poured myself a large Brandy when her indoors suggested another cruise

OINVU!

I lived in that lovely country for a number of years and consider it my second home!

Sincerely hope that you both enjoy the majesty of the fjords!

Have travelled all over the World - but this will be the 1st Scandinavian Country I have visited and quite looking forward to it - especially the Flam rail jouney.

Peter - what's the weather like in July - is it a good time to go as it has now been booked. Anyone interested look up cruise no. L1509 on the Fred OLsen cruise lines website.

Norway is a brilliant place, in April the 24 hours of daylight starts until August up on the top end (Artic circle,) then there is the midnight sun. you can get boat trip to Svarlbard to see the polar bears. In the winter you can go on Killer whale safaris and see the Aurora. Where else in the world can you see so many natural phenomenons?
I've not been in over 10 years, Brilliant place,That's my verdict. I wish i could afford to take the whole family for a week, just so they can all say they have seen the natural events and wildlife.

All I can say is that July in Norway is definitely cooler than the Canaries!

Go with the thought that:-

Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot,
Whatever the weather,
We weather the weather,
Whether we like it or not!

It is little tongue twister that you will be able to use ALL OVER Norway!

The beer is too expensive to drink too much!

Thats all right Peter - have paid for an on board inclusive drinks package, so will save the serious drinking till I'm back on the ship.

At the current exchange rate the drinks package works out at roughly £10 per person per day and most drinks on board are then free, and you get a a 50% discount if you choose  the more expensive wines and spirits (the "house" wine is free). We had our moneys worth on the last cruise and see no reason why we shouldn't do so once again.  :beers:

What is it they say about great minds think alike??  :D

SWMBO and I booked a 2 week cruise to Norway in July a couple of weeks ago - we sail from Southampton on the 1st July!  :claphappy: However we are going with P & O Cruises. We are planning on doing the Flam railway excursion too as the description and pics look stunning!

It will be my first ever cruise but Debbie has been on a Med cruise before. We were trying to decide whether to do the Med ot the Fjords, but decided that, as neither of us are really too keen on very hot places and too many crowds in the heat, we thought that Norway would be best!

Can't wait to go - hope you have a good time too!

I worked in Oslo for 5 years and managed a trip to North Cape one summer, to see the midnight sun. Flew to Alta and drove the rest of the way, with a trip into Finland for dinner. From Honningsvaag, took the Hurtigruten round the coast to Tromsø. Overcast all the time, never saw the sun at all. On the last full evening, the sky cleared and I have some stunning photos of the midnight sun. Last year, did the Great Rail Journeys trip to see the Northern lights. Very good trip and we did see the aurora.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

We sail on the 3rd of July from Southampton and it will be our 6th cruise.
We weren't sure the 1st time we went on a cruise whether we would enjoy it or not, but now we are totally hooked on it.

I am sure you will enjoy it, perhaps we should both wear an NGF badge when we go ashore as we might both end up on the same shore excursions.

The Flam railway experience for us is scheduled for the 7th of July.

If you want any tips on dos and donts when cruising just PM me.

I've twice had great Norwegian weather in July, and loved the Flam railway.  They know their attractiveness to tourists and railway buffs, and stop wherever there is any scenic or railway interest.  Keep your eyes open on both sides of the track!  Have a great time.  We are off to the Faroes and Grimsay in early June, hoping for good weather but not expecting too much railway interest!

I have just had a check and we are in Flam on the 4th July, so we may not get a chance to meet there I'm afraid.  :( However, I will still get an NGF badge just in case (and it is about time I got one!)

Is yours a 13 night cruise too? I can't wait to see the Midnight Sun - and we may have to do a winter cruise some time to see the Northern Lights!

Having mentioned to work colleagues that we are going on a cruise, others who have gone on one are coming out of the woodwork for advise - but the more the merrier! Luckily with my other half having been on one already, she is getting prepared and is making lists even now! (One disadvantage living with a Personal Assistant? But, as I am fairly disorganised, she does come in handy in keeping me sorted too!  :-[ )

Our's is just an 8 nights cruise to Norway, as we already have another 2 week cruise booked in October around the Canary Isles, Madeira, and Morroco.

As regards cruise holidays I would recommend Princess Cruises and Fred Olsen as we have very much enjoyed both.

American cruise lines I avoid like the plaque.

If you were at all interested you could visit my YouTube sight (Tenerife Terry) where I have put several cruise videos.

That's the same site as I upload my Model railway videos to, and am just preparing another one for upload of my layout in it's current state.
