I stumbled upon a most interesting article on our hobby in the Wall Street Journal (surely the most unlikely of places) whilst traveling back from Washington DC to Philadelphia on the train this evening (on the Acela Express if anyone is interested)

Wrong gauge for the NGF, but it struck a nerve for me because the reason I got back into the hobby was because of my late father - same as the author of this article. I promised my dad that I would build a layout to ensure some of his rolling stock would have a home and that his grandchildren could enjoy them. Without his inspiration Chetcombe would not exist and neither would untold hours of pleasure I have enjoyed through re-engaging in our hobby.

Here are some pics of my father's final layout. Unnamed, unfinished, but perfect.

Thank you Mike. That story and your pix brought back many warm memories for me as well. Cheers, Bill.

Lovely story Mike, and what a train driver giving a child money to by sweets, the memory of that day with the sound of the loco to encourage a young one to get fond of trains, ithink we all have different stories to tell how we got into Railway Modelling, and for you to follow your fathers wishes that is so comendable and the enjoyment it gives you.

Good on you Mike and your children will pick up on a fantastic hobby.

Great story, and cracking layout, Mike
I can see where you got your skills from!

Thank you for sharing your story with us Mike and judging by your fathers face with his grandson, I would bet money that Liam gave him so much pleasure in his last years.

cheers John.
