What is the typical length of a conventional coach?  (With just starting out I have no rolling stock to measure yet)

Google doesn't seem to have the answer and I can't quite find any references in any images I have found.

Many thanks

Look at N gauge coaches on Hattons site, there are thumbnails with a ruler along side to give you some idea.

A BR mk1 coach is 135mm if that's any help... BR mk2's are about the same, i'd say a rough average would be about 150mm maybe 20mm more if your going continental.

Hope that helps !
If it's got rails... you have my full, undivided attention - Steam, diesel and electric, 'tis all good !

A BR Mk3 coach, or DMUs of similar dimensions such as classes 156/158/170, is 23 metres long or pretty much exactly six inches in N.  The model train will be a bit longer thant this because of coupling gaps.

I'd be worthwhile joining the N Gauge Society. A lot of the answers to these sort of questions are contained in their Handbook that is supplied free to new members along with helpful tips and information. Plus you'll get all the benefits of membership like a bi-monthly Journal, access to their shop and exclusive products (RTR and kit wagons).

You can even join on-line (IIRC);  http://www.ngaugesociety.com/
