Hi,

I'm planning an N gauge layout set in the early 1980s which will include a fairly large freight terminal.

No 1980s goods scene would be complete without a trusty "gronk", but I am having trouble finding a class 08 in rail blue colours. The current Graham Farish model appears to only be produced in BR black or BR green.

Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase a ready-to-run rail blue class 08?

Thanks

They can be found on Ebay but are hard to find new nowadays. Watch out for the old version though, not a patch on the new tooling.

Probably best to wait until the new-tooling one comes out in BR blue again, bound to be another batch-run sooner or later  ;)

'Tis a shame that they seem to have concentrated on minority liveries (that don't seem to have sold out like the blue ones) while the traditional and long lived BR blue is almost ignored.

I'm also wating for a new batch in blue.

I can't quite believe how long it has taken for a green one to come out! It was worth the wait.

So far they have been in:

EWS
Railfreight
Freightliner
BR blue

The recent ones are:

BR green
BR green weathered with wasp stripes
BR black

They are excellent locos. My recent green one is an amazing runner.

There has been at least one special edition relesed as well. (Modelzone Ivor)

The last time I was in the Model Junction, Bury St Edmunds, they had one of the original (new) Rail blue versions for sale at £51 if I remember correctly. They have a website.

A green one is on my to-get list (almost got one at the N Gauge show until I saw there were Q1s available), anyone know what year wasp stripes were first applied?
They're there for their tea.

Wow, two batches (must have missed one) and still all but sold out - just goes to show how popular and under-represented the blue ones are (although it's still less than 25% bearing in mind the RTC one).

Plenty of blue ones about with 2 batches (2000 odd models) - the big retailers are sold out, but usually plenty smaller retailers still have them. And if you can't source one, blue is the easiest respray there is - just mask off the wasp stripes and windows and respray any EWS, railfraight or Freightliner version.

Somewhat tacky and slapdash approach. To do a decent job you realy need to remove the glazing and ladders, and strip the paint and logos off  to avoid old livery lines/logo outlines showing through and then prime and paint to avoid over thick paint build up.

But yep, blue is a pretty easy livery, although that doesn't detract from Farish not getting the balance of liveries a more accurate match to demand.

No need to be cheeky. Having airbrushed plenty of models I know what's required prep wise thank you.......

It's the only one they've so far done 2 runs of. So clearly they recognise it's popularity to some level. And if they didn't do other liveries no doubt they'd get complaints too. There are stacks of other models that can't be bought right now as they are out of stock - it's the way batch production works.

Either way there's one for sale here, not exactly difficult to find after 5 mins Google searching...:

Wow, if S&J are for real (no reason to suspect otherwise), then there are some good prices there...

I remember a few years ago getting into a bidding war for a Farish 101 in NSE on eBay that pushed it to over £100 before I gave up,...they have one for £54.99.

I know its out of date tooling now, but I would have seriously considered that even 2 years ago!

Re the Blue 08...I am amazed how much BR Blue is in fashion (if our hobby has such a thing) these days....wasn't it hated at the time?!

bluedepot

that is a good price for the 08

i would like a dcc fitted / dcc ready 08 in either br blue or departmental grey.

i wonder if dapol may scale down their 08 for n?  they have the small dcc chassis now...
