I'm fortunate enough during the early part of next week to be spending sometime York.

Does anybody have any recommendations for Model Railway Shops in York that might be worth a visit?

Thank you.

To be honest, you don't have a lot of choice these days ...  :(

Monk Bar Models is worth calling into (the clue for where they are is in the name  :smiley-laughing:), but don't expect prices anywhere near what you can get on the 'Net or from main suppliers like RoS, Hattons, Hereford Models etc.  There are some bargains, but from my perspective they were few & far between last week.

I think there's another model shop the other end of York, but I can never find them  ::)

The one attached to the Station is long gone, moved into the countryside (Gainsborough somewhere ?).

Then there are some few items in the NRM itself - a lot less currently than when I was there last, and no N.

20+ years ago as a boy I used to go to Monk Bar Models and bought the precious n gauge stock with my hard-saved pocket & birthday money. Peco wagon kits I could manage on my own, but the precious Minitrix locos would be 50/50 in partnership with my dad :) Back then they also did a good line in cheap second hand goods, so managed to get a rake of 6 GraFar Mk 3s for 50p each...

I understand they are still going strong, although can't promise the 50p Mk 3s!

They are under Monk Bar and the web address is: http://collectable-models.co.uk/ - seemingly not too shabby on price for a small retailer.

York, being a walled city, is nice and compact in the centre so everything is easy walking distance...

Unless one has opened in the last three years Monk Bar is the only model railway shop in York. Puffers went to Pickering many years ago. There prices are ususally lower than MRP but not as low as the big box shifters.

Stock levels can be un predictable as they often dont seem to replenish once the original supply has been sold.

I was in Monks Bar shop last September and they had a good selection of N gauge. Luckily I was spending a fair bit of dosh and they gave me what equated to about 10% off
Anyway, it was equivalent to saving postage from the big mail order companies.

I was about to say "What ?  I went to Pickering & didn't see them !  :'(" until I did a Google & found out they're the ones opposite the NYMR station, and I called in   ::)

They were OK ... nothing jumped out at me, so didn't buy anything (besides, SWMBO was waiting outside so we could go on the train  :D)

Did anyone mention Monk Bar yet :D in all seriousness though, Monk Bar Models is well worth a visit, it's a lovely model shop.

Resurrecting a thread of 10 long years ago...... I emailled Andy at monks bar models who can be reached at info@monkbarmodelshop.co.uk

The shop will be at the show Saturday but will be limited on what  they can take and Andy kindly will provide walking directions plus take orders as I'm interested in a couple of items and checking availability.

Andy is happy to take orders and one can pay at the show.  Saves me postage.
