I'm contemplating the notion of putting interiors in some of my coaches, mainly ex-LNER stock and BR Mk 1s. My question is - what colour should the seats be? I've looked at some Google images and they mainly seem to be blue in various shades, but there also seems to be examples in red and grey. Was there any set livery and did it change over time or vary from region to region? And does it really matter? On a more practical level, would the increase in weight make any difference to how many coaches my (mainly steam) locos can haul?

I don't know if Bill Bedford is still going but there used to be downloadable coach seats on his website - blue for first class and red for 2nd/3rd class.

Yes, blue for first and red for third, later second seems to be most common. Blue, in four patterns, was definitely a mk1 standard specification; third/second had five patterns, both classes patterns being named 'moquette'.

Don't forget to paint the antimacassars white in first!

Partitions above the seat seem to be usually varnished wood veneers, though it's possible some were white.

On the level, the extra weight would be unnoticeable, and only if you had long trains on steep gradients would it make a difference, I think.

Unless you're using white metal, the added mass of a card, paper, brass or plastic interior will add negligible weight to a train.

Moquette describes the type of material covering the seat, in this case a type of woven fabric with a pile. Sometimes made the backs of my legs itch when I was in short trousers.

Thanks for all the replies. I have tracked down the Bill Bedford downloads and they seem to fit the, err, Bill. I will have a go with those. I've attached them as pdfs for anybody who wants them.

I had also found these 3D printed ones on eBay:
