just had a call on my mobile.
supposedly BT calling to say there has been suspicious activity on my land line.
they have been trying to contact me unsuccessfully and they are going to disconnect my land line and internet.

don't know why they phoned my mobile instead of the land line, probably because I don't have an account with BT.

usual recorded voice asking you to select option this and that, which will no doubt connect to a premium rate number.

number calling was
02082957294

obvious scam, just a heads up.
reported on who called me.

update,
just had a call on my mobile from
07707367440

looks like a new round of the Amazon scam.
my acct will be renewed at £79.99 from my bank account unless I select option 1 to speak to an advisor.

good luck with that, don't have, never have had, and no intention of ever having an Amazon account.

usual recorded message so can't even tell them what to do with their options and accounts  :veryangry:

Yes I had a automated call yesterday "you have just missed a call from your internet provider, press 1 to......". This is on my VM landline, and how have I missed a call when I just picked it up. I had two calls from different numbers in less than 5 mins, probably originating from India. Trouble with Virgin Media landline is you can't block the calls so I turned the phone off for a while.

NEVER answer my landline. If it is someone genuine they will leave a message.
My consultant's  secretary rang my landline a couple of weeks ago and when I didn't pick up she then phoned my mobile.

I dread to think how many phishing calls and texts I have received. I have caller display on my landline and if I don't recognise the number, I let the answering machine pick it up. Similarly, if my mobile doesn't display a name, it means it's not someone I know so I let the voicemail pick it up. If there is no voicemail message, I block the number. Truecaller app on my iPhone does the job.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

no caller display on the landline, and first thing on any landline or mobile is disable voicemail.

if important they will phone again.

did at one time always answer the land line as either ...
"Main Guardroom, Cpl. xxxxx Sir"
or
"Security control, Officer xxx, how may I help you ?"

amazing how many people hung up  >:D

I had a recent email that my Pay Pal account had been suspended.Follow the links etc.
Only use it for Ebay purchases so knew it was fake and blocked it.

I had a spate of those and just by checking the sender's mail address it was easy to spot it was false info.
I'm like Malc in as much as, if I don't recognise the number, I just let it go to message and then check the message 5 mins or so later.

of course the other option is ....

phone rings ...
pick up, but say nothing .......

silence....

click brrrrrrrrr

previously you used to get "Richard" from wherever ....

now a days it's all pre recorded voices, you can't even have fun winding them up.

so, if genuine, they will phone back.
check 'whocalledme'
most of these numbers will NOT connect if you try to call them back.

@Acko22, please, why did you leave, you could be relied on to [a] identify the **** and locate them, and deploy a drone.

OH FOR THE DAYS WHEN THINGS WERE SIMPLE.

I'm with Talktalk for landline and they have a free service called "Call Safe" where a first time caller has to say who they are when I pick up.  I can then choose  to press 1 and it accepts the call(always), choose 2 to accept the call once, or choose 3 to bar that number forever.  I've never had to press 3 because having to say their name is enough to put them off.  Since I had Call Safe enabled, about two years ago, I haven't had a single spam/phishing call, whereas previously I was getting three or four a week.
Cheers, Trev.

just had another of the Amazon scam calls, from 07988 256 161

don't know if they ever use the same number twice, probably not as these numbers are never able to be called.

I've had a sudden increase in spam calls/messages on my mobile in recent weeks. If it's a real person on the other end I sometimes enjoy myself by keeping them on the phone as long as possible (they are probably paying for the call) by asking questions they don't expect. "Which car accident are you calling about?", "What is the fault have you discovered with my broadband?", "While you are on the phone, would you like to hear the Good News about Jesus Christ?". The stunned silences can be quite gratifying. Mostly, I just block the number.

I did get quite an interesting twist on a text message the other day. It was something like, "We have been unable to deliver your Amazon parcel value £299.99. If this is not your parcel, please go to this website." Mostly, however, they are just very unimaginative.

Stay safe people,

Cheers,

Chris
