Also wagons increasingly had just a small 'NE' above a number on the lower left side of the wagon, instead of a large 'NE' either side of the centre line. This change also happened similarly to the wagons of the other 'Big Four' companies, ie, LMS, SR, and GWR.

What locos are you hoping to run? There are not many models for your period made for the LNER, especially for a branch line.

I'm looking for some 0-6-0 type for goods and maybe shunting, even if I'm looking for small steam shunters. Some 4-4-0 for passengers. Nothing fancy. I'm not sure they should have tenders, the larger ones, but if it would be appropriate, then that's OK too.

If the silhouette of the loco is correct, and just minor details need to be changed, then that's fine. I'm not a rivet counter, and have never had the chance to "spot them in the wild".

Maybe class 08, 3F Jinty would suit your 060 needs. Chris. I'm sure others by the way will have ideas

There is the Graham Farish J39, this would fit very well I think.

No connection to Hattons, it was the first link I found.
LNER livery will be fine. Can't imagine that the all black livery would be applied if it was not time for a repaint. Maintenance was minimal so some weathering is necessary...

Edit: I haven't checked if it is still available new so maybe you have to find a used one.

Neither of those is really suitable for a 1940s LNER line...

There aren't any LNER tank locos ready to run at all. Aside from the Farish J39 mentioned above, your best source is Union Mills (see the reviews on here)
There are a couple of other 0-6-0 tender locos and a couple of 4-4-0 tender locos that could be suitable for your passenger trains.

What if... a loco pre-LNER that was decommissioned around 1930, instead was moved to a branch line? So, from happy main line running, to a branch line, instead of being scrapped, still in service running passengers. Is there such a loco in the RTR section of things that I can turn into a "what if" by painting it in LNER wartime livery?

PLD

Unfortunately no, earlier locos are even more rare in the ready to run ranges...

Quote from: crewearpley40 on May 24, 2021, 11:55:44 PMI was thinking a J72 loco
but despite two manufacturers announcing it (and other hinting), a J72 has never been produced Ready-to-Run in N gauge, and unless you know something we don't is extremely unlikely to appear in the foreseeable future...  :hmmm:

As here https://anticsonline.uk/Product/Dapol-2S-022-002-LNER-8286-Wordsell-E1J72-Class-0-6-0T-LNER-Green-N_N107653745 you have to preorder , everyone are waiting .... https://www.modelrailshop.co.uk/c/1199/Graham-Farish-Steam-Locomotives      I saw one farish 372825 on a certain evilbay
Suggest you read the relevant threads on here... A J72 has never been released by either Dapol or Farish, and the chances of either appearing in the foreseeable future are extremely slim...

We shall see. I'm not arguing. Like many awaiting items we have to preorder. Looking forward to seeing this take off. Wish the OP good luck with her project

Hi

Liveries can be changed on locos reasonably easily in N. I don't consider myself to be very skilled in this area but I did manage to re paint 2 Dapol 14xx from GWR green into BR livery - one in BR lined green and one in BR black. The lining and Br transfers, numbers were from Fox and although the lining was tricky, it worked out ok. I'd recommend a decent airbrush for respraying. Pics below of what I achieved - good luck!

That looks very nice! I've wanted an airbrush for a long time. When it's time to do the repaints, I'll have a reason to get one.

If any loco would look reasonably close to the real deal, appropriate for the time and place, then a little "bashing" to make it look even closer isn't something that worries me. I just need to know what to get, so I can plan the layout properly with the size of spurs, platforms, and so on.
