About 12 months ago I had finished track laying and as far as I knew everything worked fine.
Track tested with all locos and wiring o.k.

Decided not to do any more running but to get on and complete scenery which is now virtually complete and looking good.

So what has gone wrong and what lessons have I learnt?

DO NOT cover any part of the track with fixed scenery even a few inches.
ENSURE all wiring is FULLY accessible.

You can by now guess what has happened - both of the above in several places, I now need to hack away some nice groundworks or start again.

I'm sure we've all been there. 

Yes always ensure plenty of access to covered trackwork, as that's there place things will go wrong, trains will derail or get stuck and track will need the most cleaning.

I had a tunnel through a hill with buildings on the top. I left a letterbox hole behind the hill to retrieve stock that had derailed. I found, the first time I needed access, that I could put my hand in but not get it out holding the stock. I had to resort to poking the coach out of the tunnel mouth with a stick.
