Hi all

I have a number of plank wagons with loads that I would like to cover with something that would resemble a tarpaulin.

Anyone got any recommendations for something that would look appropriate in N-Gauge.

Thanks

I've seen a few varieties of home made ones. The latest I saw was with cigarette papers, but I've also had success with using masking tape and tissue paper.

I've heard folks who have used toilet tissue but know no more than that.

Oooo, interesting, I'll be watching this with interest as I've wanted to try and recreate some curtain sided containers.
These curtain sides tend to have lots of folds and ripples in from the wind but the principle would be similar to a wagon tarp.

So with the toilet/tissue paper do you soak it PVA and then form the wavy patterns and folds?

I'm pretty sure rizla cigarette papers folded and creased offer a good cheap solution - i m sure  ensign Elliott on his layout used this method

I knew I had asked Elliott before how he constructed rizla tarpaulin covers and he models the cornish China Clay's. Thanks Mick for the link

Interesting idea on 'that other place' using Tunnocks Caramel wafer wrappers https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/158921-tarpaulins-a-taste-sensation/&tab=comments#comment-4153019

Seems to work well in Orribly Oversize so no reason why it shouldn't work in N Gauge.

Plus you get to eat lots of delicious sweeties, win, win I think  ;) ;)

Cheers

Neal.

I think you will find this video very useful on a method that seems to work very well.

She who must be obeyed says I am spending too much time on this forum. I love her dearly but what does she know?

There is an excellent article by Rob Elliot in the current NGS journal (1/21) on making tarpaulins for open wagons. Whilst the use is for china clay wagons the method would be OK for any open wagon. Good spot Chris @crewearpley40

That was the article by Ensign Elliott both Mick and Norman have kindly pointed out that slipped my mind !

Thin aluminium foil from a choccy bar or similar can be used, or even kitchen foil if you need a bit more rigidity.

Makes the 'crumpled' look easy. I paint with acrylics.

The hatch covers here, though bigger, are made this way.

I remember reading on this forum or some other perhaps of a person that made their tarpaulins from the wrapper from a pack of Tesco Brie. This was when their own brand brie was in silver wrap.

Nowadays it is in a cream coloured Creamfilelds wrap.

Tissue soaked in PVA also works.

Thanks for all the replies

Will give a few of the suggestions a go over the weekend

Currently chomping my way through a pack of Tunnocks at the moment and will also try the Rizlers as well

Will post back with some results.
