Have you considered what will happen to your treasured layout and models when you have moved on?

Is it fair to expect your partner, best friend, local club etc to just take care of it without any guidance?

A local group of modellers have been discussing this and decided it would be a good idea to write a paper for the joint benefit of modellers before they move on and for their partners who are faced with the disposal problem.

But surely we are not the first to consider this matter and why reinvent the wheel again if it exists already.

Does anyone know of such a document?

Also I have a vague recollection of hearing about a club/society that offers help in this respect?

Interesting. Something I have thought about for some years now (since a triple bypass op) and I've also alluded to the subject on the forum before. My current situation is my stock and anything saleable will be sold to the box shifter offering the most with any monies being donated to the charity specified in my will. The executor of my will knows if this is not carried out then everything goes to charity and no one receives a single penny of my estate! (Just in incentivise them, you understand.)

Junior gets it all as he's an enthusiast anyway and has his own collection and layout.  Best of luck to him trying to sort it all out though, he'll probably need a bigger house

My Daughter was (and likely still is to a degree) paranoid about disposing of my models, and we are not just talking about model railways.  She's concerned she won't get their value, not because she's money grabbing, but because she's certain I'll know and come back to haunt her!!

I have told her again and again that I won't care, I'll be dead!!

So, I have databased the complete loco collection identifying by a scale of common, less common, rarities and unique ones, and where possible listed likely prices as at mid 2020.

My Will writer got me to write a "Letter of Wishes" which includes a couple of paragraphs on what to do with my models should they get sold - I included names and contact details of a couple of trusted modelling friends who'd be able to rebox my models and ensure my family don't get ripped off.

Jokes aside, the fact remains there's no one in my family interested in model trains or the full size ones. I'll not wish to inflict all my stuff on someone to try and sell for me at best price so it's going to be a call to a shop to say 'Here's a list - make me an offer' by the executor and it's gone. No messing about and the charity gets something at least.

Just watch out for the dodgy neighbor sneaking in a dodgy Solicitor to write a new Will leaving everything to them when Dementia sets in.

This is a very timely post, a friend of mine passed away last year. He had a large collection of N gauge. His daughter who lives in America wishes to sell the house as soon as possible but is unable to travel to do this personally. She contacted me about the railway collection asking if it was worth anything!  It is probably worth a small fortune but no one can get to it to value it, sort it out or sell it until lockdown is over. Apparently he did leave a letter stating his wishes somewhere but that hasn't been found.

I imagine that all over the country relatives are being left with collections of all sorts of things that they need to dispose of unaware of their value. eBay and the auction rooms are going to be kept busy in a few months time!

I have a file for every loco that I own which gives an indication of value but who knows whether it will be valid when I fall off my perch? None of my family are interested in railways. Likewise my husband has a whole shed full of mountain bike gear but luckily my son shares the same interest.

I think a letter of wishes with contact details is probably the best solution to the problem. It's just something most of us don't want to think of.

Not to get too morbid, but I keep a ring binder file known as 'The Death Book' in which there is my will, copies of utilities bills, bank statements, letters to do with my NHS history etc etc for my Executor. I'd hate to think anyone really struggles to find things when I finally run down the curtain and join the choir invisible (thanks to Monty Python's parrot sketch)

Just to take Micks 'Death Book' a step further, I have started a spreadsheet. I am putting bank accounts details on one page, insurance policies etc on another, and so on in that vein, including a 'Personal' page. All Louisa will have to do is open up the computer, find the file, and all the necessary instructions will be there for her. I will also print out a hard copy, just in case.
