hi

can anyone recommend a good grass mat?

im looking for one which is short grass, so 1mm - 2mm.  i dont want wild grass or a meadow, something more suited for a park, football pitch, or grass areas in a well kept town!

its difficult to tell from pictures on online shops and most seem to have longer grass more suitable for oo or wild grass.

cheers

Many would say "any left in the packet..." most grass mats aren't particularly realistic in colour or texture.

I wouldn't fancy trying to playing football on grass 6in - 1 ft high!! For a well maintained playing field, you are probably better off with simple old fashioned scatter materials, and the finer the better.

Hi Tim,

Sorry, I don't know the answer at the moment but am interested in an answer. I am hoping to model a little airport next year and thought that grass matting around the runway would keep things simple.

I hope to get to a model shop soon, depending on covid restrictions etc., to have a look so will let you know as soon as there is any joy or not.

Cheers, weave  :beers:

I've used Woodland Scenics Readygrass Vinyl Matting on a couple of layouts.
It comes in a variety of colours/shades.

I would only use it for maybe well manicured gardens or small parks really because for bigger areas it is simply too uniform.
Scatter material and/or static grass is I think better for larger areas.
Here's a small garden on my Tregonning layout where I've used the grass matting :

I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

You can't go far wrong with the European manufacturers' grass mats - a long tradition. There is a schol of opinion that rails against these as 'unrealistic' but that isn't really treu, grass style and colour varies hugely in real life and in different seasons, light etc.

On Steinheim, I used a mix of conventional flock, mixing the colours, and a couple of Gaugemaster/Noch grass mats, one in green and one in a more autumnal shade; these are the type that Gordon alludes to. They are a bit same-y over a large area (although that may be the look you're after), but I'm not sure you'll easily find one that is 1-2mm, they're mostly a little longer. For short, well kept grass, I'd go for flock, perhaps interspersed with occasional tufts - you can get packs of grass tufts to provide variation from quite a few suppliers.
