Was cutting some foam with one of those knives with the extending blades when, oops, that'll be my thumb then    The blade caught in the foam, dragged to its full extent then impacted length ways up my thumb.  Result - 3cm long gash from the top of the cuticle, across the first joint and ending just below the knuckle, fortunately the blade impacted square on the bone and stopped, it didn't go off at an angle.  So, in the past,  I have seen the inside of my knees and some of the fingers of my right hand, now I know what the inside of my thumb looks like too  , interesting watching the joint moving.

I didn't see the point in driving all the way to Dundee to the A&E, so I had a root around in my first aid pack, found some old steri-strips which still were sticky so got Della to put 3 of them on and covered it all with a big plaster.

Have to say it is getting a bit nippy now but it has been a couple of hours so that must be it healing.

So just you lot be careful when using these extending blade knives, coz they sting a bit when you get it wrong 

just goes to show some people shouldn't be let loose with sharp objects   

i did a similar thing last year but with it being a new blade in my craft knife i didn't feel it for a while
well until i saw the blood 

hope it wont cause problems with your visit to wigan at the weekend

That sounds pretty bad Lawrence are you sure you don't need stitches ?.

I think cutting our fingers is an occupational hazard for hobby people, I was running a one sided razor blade along a ruler while cutting balsa and watched the end of my finger fall off, worst thing was I had to play guitar in the band and needed my finger tip.

Made me cringe..................

I cut part way through a finger, with a hacksaw, many ears ago, in a metalwork class at school. I was supposed to be filing and tried to take a shortcut with the hacksaw.

I had to go to hospital, have it taped up, have a tetanus jab, then went to my brothers and was the first member of the family to see my new nephew. (Now grown up with a teenage daughter)

Ouch! Hope Della gave thumb a good clean before taping it up for you.

Whenever I came anywhere near a knife - or anything sharp - there would be a rush for the first aid kit. For some time now, I have been kept away from anything sharp (the doctors say I will be better soon  ). I dread the day when my layout requires track cutting or  - God forbid - soldering.

Managed to see the inside of my wrist, care of a Stanley knife (while doing bathroom renovations) ... interesting 

Yelled for my missus that I'd cut myself & got a "yeah, yeah" until she saw it - & panicked    So much for an ex-nurse !

Somehow, I managed to miss every muscle, sinew, nerve, artery & vein !

Still have the scar from slicing my finger while trying, age 17, to cut the side off a Hornby VDA van because I'd realised they looked a bit too narrow and would be better with a shim of Plastikard.  I've since discovered razor saws are better for this type of job...

I was camping with a pal in the early 70's. After a few sherbets, we got back to the tent and decided we wanted some beans on toast. I was opening the tin with an old fashioned up and down opener and slipped. I cut the soft part at the back of my thumb. I managed to sew the wound together with a needle and cotton. Never felt a thing until I sobered up. Still got the scar as a reminder.

Superglue. You need Superglue. Better than stitches if you are going for a home remedy.

Is your tetanus up to date?

I'm generally ok with knives. My forte is sticking screwdrivers into thumbs or fingers. My worst was fitting a new BT connection block to a window frame when Oops- slipped and found myself with the screwdriver pinning me to said frame by the skin between thumb and finger. Nearly meant a permanent  rather than a  !
Nearly as good as when I put a 1/4" chisel through my hand by not looking before ramming my hand into an opened toolbox (not my toolbox). That was more of a ^*!"£^&(^"$&*£"*() than a Oops 

Sorry to hear about your slip but you really ought to go to the docs and get an anti-tetanus shot as that blade will most certainly not have been sterile.

Hope you didn't waste good whisky in an attempt to sterilise the wound.
At least some folks at Wigan may be spared Lawrence thumbing his nose at them

Note to self - remove all sharp objects before the Royal visit on Friday/Saturday

That's a good point Trev, never thought of that  I'll ring the nurse later and check mind you the blood was flowing freely so probably flushed the wound fairly well on it's own.  There was a little bit of bleeding overnight but nothing major only just visible through the dressing, Della did a good job with the steri strips and I have had a Tramadol this morning so not only don't I feel it, I don't care either
