I have taken the decision to stop using my FitBit.
After three years of averaging just short of 13000 steps per day, I've decided to stop. Stop using the FitBit that is not stop walking.
I'll still walk every day but I found that quite simply I was becoming a slave to the machine. Sometimes I'd walk just for the sake of it to "keep my average up".
So, from now on I can just walk when I feel like it.
Anybody else feel the same way?
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

I used an app called "Endomondo" on my iPhone which tracked activities - walking, running, cycling - for a couple of years and I got a little enslaved to the damn thing - I found myself trying to beat my best times on a bike ride, or hike at a slightly faster average speed, or increase my weekly "step average" (which really means nothing anyway). It was getting in the way of me enjoying just being out in the open air and living in the moment, so I quit using it.

Long answer - yes, I felt the same way!

I got one and used it for a bit, and yes, it began to become more like some kind of measure of success or failure rather than a valuable tool. Also I found the rubber wrist-strap continually caused nasty friction burns after only a couple of days of wear at a time, in spite of cleaning it regularly.

All in all not one of my better investments!

Sometimes you bite the dog...

...sometimes the dog bites you!

----------------------------------------------------------

I can explain it to you...

...but I can't understand it for you.

Apparently the 12000 steps a day magical goal is a myth. What matters is walking at a brisk enough pace, regularly.

If you want to still monitor your walks then you might try downloading the Nike run club app to your iPhone (I don't know for sure but it's probably available for other flavours of smart phone). It records distance, pace and elevation change using gps. It can get obsessive and you can get goals set and earn awards etc etc... However, we use ours to check that we haven't dawdled. It's free by the way. It does need a mobile phone signal too, so in deepest Cornwall  :)

Thanks Keith. I used to use an app on my iphone then graduated to the FitBit.
I'm now going to enjoy my walking rather than trying to hit targets.
I may still use an app on longer walks though, just to see how far we go.
Cheers

Yes, I do find the distance measure very useful. Why am I feeling knackered? Ah that's because that walk was 6 miles.  :)
