Hi all,

My 8 yr old rides horses (as did I when I was younger) and he really wants to include a Horse box van with our joint train collection. As we do GWR in the pre-WW2 period, it would need to work for this. My question is what is available out there to fill this project???   

I am aware of the Farish 'Sir George Widgeon' wagon, and I am not sure it would be just a case of getting one of these, striping the paint and redoing it???

I am also aware that there is a very old Lima GWR horsebox van but I am not sure how accurate this would be and whether or not it would look right next to our existing collection, which is a mix of Peco, Farish, and Dapol.

Hoping some of you out there can offer some comments and advice. Perhaps there is a GWR Horsebox wagon I am not aware of...but otherwise, I am fine with stripping paint, repainting, and putting on new decals (I have the ModelMaster GWR sets).

The Lima one is actually very good for the body.
The roof has oodles of vents too many as the designer only had side views rather than plan views to work from and put vents everywhere they could be seen in each side view - you just need to cut a lot off with a scalpel (I don't remember which ones).
The chassis - well you are probably better off with a more modern Farish chassis (probably).
But you can make a very good GW horsebox from this model.

Thanks Bob, that is indeed a very useful article...of course the key being able to find some old Lima kits at a reasonable price', as they seem to be few and far between and expensive.

Other ideas always welcome too.

Don't know if it's of help but 1 of many planned jobs I have is to build the GWR horse box as detailed in an article by Matt Pinto in NGS Journal 1/17. It details alterations necessary using the Lima model. I got a Lima h.box with not too much difficulty.

@PennineWagons thanks for that link. Is that a 3D printed kit as it looks really rough...the wood looks like termites got to it. It is also expensive, especially considering you still have to add buffers and all....might be better to go for an old Lima kit. Yet, thanks for the info.

So does anyone have some old Lima Horseboxes kicking around they would like to sell???
